Why We Rated This on for Ages 8 and Up

The good stuff

  • Educational value:

Learn the game, run plays, and compete against your friends and family.
  • Messages:

Players perform well, no egos in the virtual NBA.

What to watch out for

  • Violence & scariness:

Far less than a real NBA game.
  • Language:

No bad words, unlike the real NBA.
  • Consumerism:

Advertising is present in the arena on billboards. Of course the game also promotes the NBA and their top players, who in turn promote even more products in real life.

What Parents Need to Know

This review of NBA Live '07 was written by Andrew Bub

Parents need to know that this kind of sports simulation game can bring out everyone's competitive nature so they may need to remind kids (and adults) that it's only a game and sportsmanship should trump trash-talking, especially at home. Also, parents should know that the controls for this game are difficult to master. Parents should also be aware that this game lets kids play online against strangers, which Common Sense Media doesn't recommend for children under age 12. There's nothing policing what strangers can say to your kids while playing online.

Families Can Talk About

Talk to your kids about the media in their life. We have more tools and tips that can help
  • Families can talk about whether this game is similar to real NBA games. How do you feel about playing as a superstar? What about the other players on the floor? Is this a game that you like playing with friends and/or family? If so, why?

What’s the Story?

NBA LIVE '07 brings NBA action to your television with all the glitz and glory of televised basketball. Just move your players around with the right stick and use the buttons to switch players, pass, shoot, block, pick, dunk, and more (every button is used, some even have different uses for each action). What's new to the series is a focus on the big boys of basketball. Players can take control of a Kobe, Iverson, or some other high-topped phenomenon, and using their superior skills, they can dominate the court and run up the score.

Live '07 offers all the standard modes found in sports games: practice, exhibition, multiplayer options, season, and dynasty. It also provides the player with tools to let you draft players and scout prospects. It features all the NBA teams, stadiums, and uniforms.

Is It Any Good?

Players experience that "me-first" attitude that tells these giants to take the glory themselves. Players will have better control, faster response, and much better accuracy while controlling superstars. Fortunately, the game reflects real life -- while Shaq is great at rebounding, he still can't make a free-throw to save his life. While superstar dominance is fun to watch and control (and the players' animations look terrific), it turns contests between teams that seem evenly matched into routs, simply because one team might have more stars than the other.

The only other problem with the game is the controls. There's a button to dunk, a button to make a jump shot, and another button to lay it up. Wouldn't a single button that reacts to how the character is moving make more sense? NBA Live '07 foregoes a bit of basketball fidelity in favor of glitz, glam, and slam-dunks; but again, it's a terrific way to simulate the highlight nature of the sport in your own living room.

    Great fun

Language: no bad words to worry about like you su-k, shut up, a--, you stink, but maybe some trash talk like miss, boo, AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA, brick ect. all minor Violence: some bumping no blood gore just sports like bumping but players can get knocked to the ground illegal fouls little kids might think it's funny NBA might even do minimal unsportsmanlike contact but if your kid is over 6 (7+) it should not at all be an issue but Violence could make kids think it's funny or do bump people or in a real game do unnessessary contact but overall the violence is pretty minor definatly if the right age Sexual Content: cheerleaders may be hardly dressed (no nudity at all) just bra's and pants

    NBA Live 2007

NBA Live 2007 is one of the world’s best games. Dunkin contest, 3 point shoot outs, graphics, just amazing, never saw a game that cool. Don’t let me get started on the dunking contest, the tricks are nice especially 360s, spider, Michael Jordan and a front flip dunk. 3 point shoot out, side three, middle three, other side 3, all cash, you can make it every time if you know what your doing. You even can change the camera sides. You even can create your own person and pick your own person. Look out for the words at the beginning of the game (getting started is confusing), you have to know what the words mean. It is a very educating and challenging game for people who don’t know how to play basketball.
