What Parents Need to Know

This review of Ratatouille was written by Jinny Gudmundsen

Parents need to know that this game, based on the Ratatouille movie, is best for ages 7-13. Violent content is pretty minimal: Kids will see the same gun-toting Grandma from the beginning the movie, but when the chefs chase Remy out of the kitchen, they simply pick him up by the tail before he wiggles out of their grasp.

More on Ratatouille

What’s the Story?

Based on the hit movie Ratatouille, the video game presents six beautifully drawn environments that are jam-packed with intriguing interactive objects. As culinarily talented rat Remy, you explore these environments to discover ways for a rat to move from the kitchen floor to the rafters as you take on over 20 missions. While, at its core, this is a platform puzzle game, it's more than that. There are special cooking games, wild rides down sewer pipes, chase games, and logic games. For families with kids of different ages, the game can be played on five levels of difficulty. Also, there are several mini-games for two players to enjoy. And four players can compete for best score in Championship Mode. Close

Is It Any Good?

Based on the charming animated film that became the darling of the 2007 summer movie offerings, RATATOUILLE the video game does justice to this beguiling license. While the story line is a little different, the characters and environments are the same and equally enchanting. The animations are adorable and fun, and the experience is further elevated by the variety of gameplay, which calls for players to be inventive as they scurry around as a rat.

If your family liked the Ratatouille movie, they will adore this console game. Close

Great for kids and surprisingly good

This game is actually pretty good! For a disney made game, the graphics are pretty good and you don't beat the game in 2 hours. It's actually fun too!

    A suprisingly fun game

I have a Nintend Wii, and this is one of the first games that I bought for it. I was expecting something pretty fun, maybe a bit above average, but my expectations were highly surpassed. Yes, I will admit that the game is pretty simple to beat, but it's just SO MUCH FUN! My personal favorite part is when you find the little mini-games that put you in food heaven. So, for the little ones: a challenging, clean game that will plaster a smile on their face. For those older: a not-so-challenging but still VERY fun game.

    ruined by unnecessary gun violence

This otherwise tame game contains gun violence. It's rather different to have the grandma with the creepy gas mask firing close-range shotgun blasts in a role-playing game than when it appears on film. My six-year-old daughter was a bit scared by the scene in the theater but absolutely terrified of the stalking, gun-toting grandma in the game. She makes her dad get her past that segment so she can get on with the more harmless fun of the rest of it.

Not as kiddish as many say

I'm sixteen and enjoy this game and even find it better than most Mario games (with Super Mario Bros. being the biggest exeption). I will admit, it is a little kiddish and easy, but it is fun with numerous styles of gameplay. While the storyline has much to be desired, the gameplay is good (but repetative at times) and you can easily see where they mixed stuff from Super Mario Galaxy and Super Mario Sunshine (the game I think is better than Galaxy but not as good as Sunshine in many ways). The only concern is that you steal a lot, but the plus is that Remy consistently says stuff like "Please no more stealing, dad." Overall, I would advise it, but if your child is older that ten then I would rent it first. Also, this game is in no way identical to the movie except for some minor refrences and the environment as well as how Remy hats stealing.

    Good for younger Wii players

This is a good game for my nearly six-year-old son. I especially like that when he makes a mistake, instead of having to start over from the beginning of the game, he is transported back to where he just played. This eases the usual frustration factor of playing this type of game.
