Relationships here are too mature for most kids.

Why We Rated This iffy for Ages 16–17

The good stuff

  • Educational value:

There's not a lot of education going on, beyond how expensive it is to eat out (and how draining it is to have a social life).
  • Messages:

Multi-ethnic (and multi-sized) characters are available, and men and women have the same career paths open to them (of course, one of these is a life of crime).

What to watch out for

  • Violence:

Players poke and slap each other.
  • Sex:

Sims fare (obscured nudity, "playing in bed") is augmented with a variety of real-life courting possibilities, including casual sex and extra-marital affairs.
  • Language:

    Not an issue.
  • Consumerism:

As always, one of the goals is to make money and buy goods, from ice cream to outfits (you can even purchase a copy of The Sims).
  • Drinking, drugs, & smoking:

Sims can order drinks at bars.

What Parents Need to Know

This review of The Sims: Hot Date Expansion Pack was written by Kate Pavao and Aaron Lazenby

Parents need to know that this is an adult world (the dating world here includes the opportunity to engage in casual sex and extramarital affairs), and there's really not much that's appropriate for or of interest to tweens and young teens.

Families Can Talk About

Talk to your kids about the media in their life. We have more tools and tips that can help
  • Families can talk about relationships. The expansion pack monitors your friendships at both a superficial and deeper level, and you might want to ask your teens if these dual levels exist in real life. Can someone be fun to hang out with, but not be there for you when you really need them? You might also want to discuss the realities of the modern dating world and the consequences of engaging in casual sex or affairs.

More on The Sims: Hot Date Expansion Pack

What’s the Story?

With this inspired expansion pack, players leave their suburb and head downtown to locales include a beach and a park for frolicking, bars and nightclubs for meeting new friends, shopping malls for buying gifts, and restaurants for wooing your sweetie.

You'll find increased demands on the art of conversation as you work to meet new people or deepen the relationship with your partner. The icons that represent dialogue play a much bigger role in the game, revealing the interests of the Sims you meet and giving you clues about the best way to bond with them. This emphasis makes the building and maintaining of relationships much more difficult, and changes the main goal of the game from conspicuous consumption to social engineering.

Is It Any Good?

It's worth noting that by advancing the game play so much (and so well) it is kind of a drag to return to the old neighborhood. The home is still inextricably connected to the game -- you've still got to go to work, sleep, and shower -- but you can't help but feel constrained by the four walls once you've relaxed at the beach. All of a sudden, your regular Sims life of watching TV and taking out the trash doesn't seem so interesting.

Hot Date is not for the kids who play the other Sims games. It's suited for advanced, mature (and upwardly mobile) players. Not only is the gameplay more subtle, but the downtown life eats up your cash like this creative game eats up your time -- with wild abandon. As the title suggests, the subject matter here is mature -- or at least as mature as a bunch of adults whooping it up over mechanical bull rides and slot machines can be.

I love makeing my sims go on dates! the only bad part is you can buy "Haert Beds" that give you sims the option to "Play in bed" and thats pretty much it, plus they give you an assortment of kisses to choose from, from peck to firiery.

This game is for teens ONLY!

some adults are writing reviews for this game they rating the game for adults ages 17 and up. I say NO.This game has lots of sexual refernces and mature themes but i say the sims: hot date is suitable for ages 13 and up the sexual references are not graphic they're very OK for younger and older teens to play. This games has lots of sexual references.
