What’s the Story?

Reviewed by Jinny Gudmundsen

In SOCCER MATH, kids in grades two to six practice arithmetic while playing a five-minute virtual soccer game. Answer math problems correctly, and the ball moves down the field. Answer incorrectly, and the opposing team intercepts the ball. Answer enough questions in a row correctly, and kids earn a goal or a corner kick.

The software covers a massive amount of math including place value, whole numbers, customary measurement and metric measurement, greatest common factor, least common multiple, fractions, percents, and decimals. Kids can select from multiple levels of difficulty and control how quickly they must respond by allowing themselves five, 10, or 15 seconds. Math questions are presented in two modes: juggling and game play. The juggling mode permits math practice without the pressure of competition; the game mode is more intense because to win, players must answer the math questions correctly.

Players can choose to be on an all-girl or all-boy team. Teams also include a mix of racial ethnicity.

The strength of Soccer Math is its depth of content, delivered in a straightforward but entertaining manner. While it doesn't offer state-of-the-art graphics, it does offer humorous animations. This software is a great way to drill math facts in either a home or school setting.
