What Parents Need to Know

This review of Star Wars Battlefront was written by Liz Perle

Parents need to know that there is nothing more violent in this game than in the movies. But it's battles, and nothing else -- lots of shooting, zapping, etc. all with the sounds from the movies. This can be either a third- or first-person shooter. This is a game that doesn't spawn much conversation -- it's just battles, battles and more battles.

What’s the Story?

All the battles from five (and a hint of the sixth) Star Wars movies can be played in STAR WARS BATTLEFRONT. You can play in any of 15 environments on 10 planets. You can choose from 20 different solder types from the Rebel Alliance, the Imperial, Clone or Droid armies. Close

Is It Any Good?

The entertainment value is very high -- kids can play alone or with up to 32 players over the Internet (although connecting can be tricky and will definitely involve someone who knows what they're doing to troubleshoot). There is no blood and no gore, but it's a non-stop shooter, explosion game. The violence is no different from the movies. There's just not anything but the battles.

The graphics and sound effects are phenomenal, and so is the range of weaponry. Younger kids will be frustrated when trying to shoot from speeder bikes since they move too fast, but they will enjoy jumping on and off them. Winning a battle takes time, and when a player dies, they can spawn again in the battle either in the form they were in or they can choose to be another type of soldier. Battle progress is difficult at times, which also might frustrate younger kids.

I rate this title on for age 12 and give it 5.0
    My concerns are:
    • Excessive violence
    • Inappropriate language

    • My highlights are:
    • Easy to play

    Pretty good Lucasarts.

Better than most, all violence is done with colorful lasers flying everywhere, and some explosions. Minor language in the campain mode. (D-word and the like)

  2. I rate this title on for age 10 and give it 4.0
    • My highlights are:
    • Easy to play

Great harmless game suitable for those over 10. No blood or swearing, a really fun Star Wars play.

  3. I rate this title iffy for age 10 and give it 4.0
    • My highlights are:
    • Positive messages

Messages: There are quite a few when you look into, despite the fact that the cutscenes are less then a minute long and are just from the movies (don't worry, no episode 3 here). When you play as the good guys, your mission briefing in Historical Campaign is sort of like you must stop the bad guys from invading a planet, or defending a peaceful one. When you play as the bad guys, your mission briefing uses words such as wipe out, destroy, or teach them a lesson, but it's mostly cartoonish. Regardless of your side, you are engouraged to use teamwork and srategy. You are discouraged and punished in the statistics for killing your own teamates. You however, get awarded for killing the most people (but they automatically come back to life). Violence: Yes, there is a fair amount of violence, and you are supposed to get alot of kills, but it is all star wars and lasers. Even the rockets and grenades are different colors from yellow to green to purple to red and even blue. There is no blood or gore, but when a droid is destroyed their limbs can go flying in all directions, but they're robots.

No blood, fine for kids, but beware of the future

Pretty fun game, even for a kid like me who has only played about 5 video games in my entire life. Shooting lasers everywhere, but no blood or gore, something I like about it. Having your player get killed can happen frequently, and the character will release an "Aaaaarrrgh!" and topple around on the ground. There IS sort of a plot, described at the beginning of the battle. My 8 year old cousin plays this game, and he HATES bloody games. All in all: Fine for kids, but may lead to more graphic first-person shooters later on. Parents should judge their type of child before allowing this.
