A review from a Teen
I myself am 14 and got an Xbox 360 just to play it. I have only heard one curse word throughout the game so far. Violence is not an issue for me because I know in real life i'm not going to pick up a rusty red wrench and go around hitting people with it. There is some gore, but not too much. I know my eldest sister who is 17 can't play the game because she can't stand the sight of blood, put them again she couldnt stand one pg13 movie with alot of blood in it without getting sick. My family is a good catholic one and my mother still lets me play this knowing that you have to make the choices between saving the little sisters or harvesting them. My mom was with me the first time i came across a little sister, after slaying the big daddy of course, I was given the chance to decide which path i would take. I decided to save them. It wasnt a hard choice to make seing that their sweet innocent little girls, and around the same age as my little sister. You gain less ADAM than harvesting, buy hey you will be rewarded with a nice ending and other gifts for saving little sisters. It is an amazing, sometimes scary game ex: In Neptunes Bounty when you crawl under grates you can see and hear the splicers above whispereing at you to come out. Sometimes the game can be too much and I have to take a break, but this is simply due to the fact that the splicers arent dont when you kill all the ones that attacked you, if you linger too long more will come. There are some light drug references and my mother stated disgust when she saw me use EVE. EVE is a type of drug like purplish fluid you have to shoot into your wrists to use plasmids. I believe the negatvie connotation of these drugs outweighs the positive, seeing that all the splicers roaming Rapture are quite literally Drug Addicts due to EVE. It shows a good representation of what will happen if you choose that way to live. All in all its a great game, fun to watch and play.

This game is very well done! I just want to say that! Most parents will only be offended by the violence, but there is no gore, just a dash of blood. Then some foul language can be heard frequently but nothing worse than a day at middle school. Also the game has some educational puzzles that you need to solve, so this game does deserve an M rating so I say good for 14 and up!

If you can handle it, buy it
This game is the most terrifying one ever! For about five minutes. The frights of the game wear off fast and it turns into a puzzling horror-survival game.

great game, just make sure your kids can handle it
excellent game, a bit on the violent side, and there is some strong language, but all in all its really not that bad. you know your kids, if you feel they are overly influenced by violence andlanguage, by all means keep them away from this game, but otherwise, this is really a great game. I absolutely love it.

amazing game with layer upon layer of meaning.
This is certainly a fantastic game, and I'm glad that the website recognizes this, but I was surprised that it overlooks the underlying commentary about objectivism, which the game isn't subtle about (andrew ryan, the antagonist, is an anagram for we r ayn rand, rand being the founder of the philosophy). The root of the city's downfall is it's under regulation of business, science, medicine, and art. The plasmids, which were highly addictive and powerful, went completely unregulated, allowing every citizen to become addicted to the substance. On top of this, all shooters of this type, in which resources are scant, are in fact educational in that they require players to plan wisely and save for the future, a skill that can be used later in life. All in all, a fantastic game that enriches on many levels.

The Story is the Attraction.
At first, this may look like another gory shoot-it-up, but as my title suggests, the story is the reason to play this. There are a few wordy dirds, but I usually don't but to much emphases on language. Also, injecting yourself with chemicals present you with power, which is about as close to promoting drugs as you can get without being presented with an AO rating. The alcohol is a little bit better at giving you the cliched "Drugs are bad" message. I'd have to say that the violence would be the reason for not getting this for my hypothetical child. Digging into a child's stomach is a little sickening, don't you think? There are plenty of ways to kill your enemies, too. Like throwing them into water can then electrocuting them. But if you can get past the guts, I'd say you are prepared for playing this. The environment is like INSERT GREAT THING HERE for your eyes. There are a few genius bonuses here. Political geeks with giggle with delight when they come across them. There is a character named, "Atlas." Also, the leader's name is Andrew Ryan. Move the R from Ryan to the front of Andrew, switch the A and Y in Ryan, remove REW from Andrew, and switch the two words. Also, Ryan's speeches remind me of a certain political view. Overall, this is a great game to buy. If you are mature, get it.

I love this game.. You can tell they spent alot of time working on it.. The Violence? Yes. There is blood. Its a horror game. So you dont like horror games. You probably should look for a different game :) Some posters on the wall advertising a bar? dunno didnt look too closely. these pics can be easily avoided.. so if thats why your not getting it i urge you to reconsider xD i believe its only in the 1st level anyways.. (30+mins maybe?) lol.. Swearing heard occassionally.. Drinking - yes you can mk yourself go drunk ect.. Smoking.. can make moral desicions save little sister, or "harvest" and thats bout it rest is up to you..

Mostly the violence and language you should be concerned about, also pretty dark messages, but not bad. I beat this game twice and all i can say is that its top notch.

Intense, but brilliant masterpiece
Amazing graphics, cinematic shooting sequences, and mildly disturbing make this game pure GOLD in the history of first-person-shooters.

For a game like this it doesnt really matter about the violence the blood or the alchohol it matters about the splicers or zombie like things that can come out of nowere and attack you this can frighten a child at an extreme extent. my experience withthe game was great but there are those moments were u get the chiklls and want to pee in your pants everything is great about the game it has a great storyline but its just the scare kids get from playing it.

Not gross,yes,but I won't lie it's definitely pretty *%#>+¥€ brutal.
I have this and Bioshock 2 for my xbox(going to get Bioshock :Infinite next year as soon as it comes out) and I have to say its very brutal. Its not violent abut brutal. The language can get extremely harsh and unpleasant at sometimes but if you are mature, you will just forget it as it dosent really matter about the game what matters most about the game is if it is fun not about language if you forget about the bad things and just play it like watching your average PG13 movie, you won't learn from it,although some children may not be mature enough to just play it and forget it,so that's why I suggest it's pause. As for scariness level,it's not big on scariness but if your child is scared of frequent creepy noises and dosent like sci-fi ,best not to let him or her play this to be safe.Otherwise,it's pretty good.Just be sure to stand around when your child is playing o make sure.I play this fourteen hours a week and have completed the game a million times and after you have completed the game it's not scary anymore bcuz you know want to accept. Most of time I try to leave the Little Sisters although you don't get as much ADAM,you get rewarded-modestly,not heavily though. But you can still kill them though. However I still suggest not playing if you are weak hearted as although you don't have to kill everything in your way,you need to kill some characters at some point of the game or you will be killed yourself. But,if your mature,go get this game now and go BIOSHOCK!

Great game but mature content.
Bioshock is a excellent game but you have to know if you'r child is under 14 they may get nightmares from this game. Also it is SUPER violent. Keep away from young children.

Great for older teens, but not for tweens
Bioshock is a first-person survival-shooter which takes place in the fictional underwater city Rapture. The graphics of the game are B-E-A-U-T-I-F-U-L. the water elements seem almost alive at parts. The story is great, yet you will have to pay attention to audio logs found along the way to understand certain plot elements, especially the final plot twist. This game employs gameplay that will make people question their morales: "Should I kill the little girl and survive longer, or should i save her and sleep with a clean conscience?" A Definite must have for older gamers.

Great for mature teenagers, not all blood and guts. includes puzzles and stratergy.
This is a really cool game but for mature teenagers only as some of the content can be very violent and there is a horror theme to it. There are a lot of decisions that you have to make throughout the game like whether to save little sisters or kill them for your own benefit. It has a lot of strategy in it and isn't all just blood and violence for instance, when you hack a computer you must solve a puzzle. I think this game is fine for most teenagers.

Awesome
An awesome game. There is a lot of violence but its all so well done with the plasmids and various strategies you can use to kill your enemies. The story is well told although you need to pay close attention to understand the main plot twist. You can get drunk which makes your vision blurry and spins the camera for a few seconds. You can also smoke cigarrettes, however, everything you do affects your character. Example, smoking decreases your health but increases your eve (power source for your plasmids which are your powers such as electricity and fire). Overall, this game is well worth a playthrough and is a very well crafted game.

Amazing.
I'm very young and do feel guilt allowing my parents to buy these violent games but I do understand the real importance of this. The game is truly beautiful when it comes to visuals and amazing when it comes to the story and how it is told. Your name is Jack and peacefully, you were relaxing on a plane. Suddenly, the plane crashes and you are the only survivor. The only sign of land you find is a strange metal tower with a submarine ready to dive. As you dive into the submarine, you enter the corrupted and dangerous undersea city of Rapture. As you land, the first sight you see is a man getting killed by the silhouette of a woman with metal claws killing an innocent man. You pick up a radio and are greeted by a stereotypical Irish man named Atlas who wants you to "SAVE ME FAMILY!" The game is all about surviving Rapture and receiving a strange liquid called Adam from adorable little girls called "little sisters." However, they are guarded by "big daddies." They will do anything for those cute little girls and are extremely hard to kill. If kill a big daddy and turn the little sister back to a nice little girl, you will be given a smaller amount of Adam than if you take the Adam slug out of them. The little sister cannot survive being harvested. The story of the game is to kill Andrew Ryan, the governor, mayor, president, WHATEVER, of Rapture. The game twists around. I won't say ANYTHING specifically. DO NOT get this for kids unless you know they wont be scared of it or will NOT turn weird and start talking about killing people. To sum it, this game is wonderful but not for your sons and daughters.

Good Game, but first few minutes are scary.
I have to say, I really like this game. You will like it too, if you can handle some creepy parts. Blood and Violence: Blood is high in this game and the violence is extreme. You can beat people with a wrench, and blow them up, and shoot them. You can use plasmids, which give you supernatural powers. Language: A few F bombs, s-word, d word, b word, and h word. Drugs: The player can smoke, which increases EVE which is the limit of your plasmids, but decreases health. Alcohol: The player can drink, but makes you go blurry. Sex: There is a strip club when you first enter Rapture, the fictional setting of the game, but you can't go in it. And when you harvest a little sister, you dig into their stomachs and pull out a weird slug. It doesn't show this, thanks to all the green blood spraying at your screen. Role Models: If you save the Little Sisters, there is a positive reward, but it's at the end. But they will say, "Thank you for saving me." or "Thank you kind sir." Final Message: This is iffy for 15 year olds, due to the violence and adult content.

The entire thing is ok for 14 year olds and up but the first 5 minutes made me almost pee my pants, once you enter an elevator...I don't wanna give anything away. Its fun.

Only problem is violence
It is a very good game, gameplay wise, and it definitly has a positive message, being good has its rewards and being bad made (me at least) feel very guilty. There is Adam and Eve which you inject into yourself but it's portrayed as a bad thing since its what made all the splicers crazy killers, and all of the swearing is fairly mild and appropriet to the situation (except for the crazy splicers who just mumble swears to themselves.) Overall the only problem is violence, its not extremely violent you cant dismember people, there's just alot of blood.
