Awesome game. Violence is minimal (i.e. little blood, no gore, and is used in an appropriate context.) It does contain language that I wouldn't want my kids to use; however, it's quite infrequent and is often missed if one is not closely paying attention.

Great for older kids and teens.
Although there is not much blood and almost no gore, the game feels brutal and intense. Disturbingly life-like gun battles make the game feel brutal. The game shows civillians being slaughtered by fireing-squads and a city is destroyed by a nuclear bomb. People scream when they are killed and sometimes try to crawl away after being shot, you sometimes have to snap a dogs neck. At one point, you shoot sleeeping, unarmed, drunk enemies aborad a stolen cargo ship. Although there is very little bad language and none of that gross and unessesary sex!

Good for mature 9 year olds but unless your children are older than thatSTEER CLEAR
Gameplay of the single player is amazing however blood is emitted when high caliber weapons hit enemies or headshots occur, This blood occasionally stains environments especially with Knife Kills. However BE CAREFUL the overall game is suitable for those mature 9 year olds The final two levels ARE GRAPHIC featuring a slow motion depiction of your comrades brains LITERALLY getting blown off, And the other is a close quarters mission featuring dead civilians everywhere and Blood staining the walls often HOWEVER these are the only tow actually graphic missions BUT the computer version Features A NO-BLOOD FEATURE!!

Beware, this game may turn your child into a future soldier.
This is our military in urban and rural combat. I've played a lot of FPS shooter games and I've seen this game type repeatedly influence kids to join the military to be a sniper, just like Halo 2 did. If you have any concerns about your kid going into the military then don't let them play this because a lot of them are going to want to experience the rush of it all not understanding what else is required to be a military soldier. The military can be a great experience but it's not all high action like these games are. And in real life there's no re-spawning after you're blown away. That being said, this is a well made game with accurate graphics and balanced online game play. It's challenging so if you're uncoordinated don't even bother, you'll just get frustrated and owned by the other team. My son often takes it to the other players and even shows me up on occasion. We have a blast working together in these matches and really know how to win as a team. I love it for that.

Great for adults, not for children. (Beware multi-player language)
I think what most parents may miss on this game are the cut scenes. They are very vivid. At the beginning, you take on a 1st person perspective and are dragged to your execution with a man putting a gun to your temple and ... you get the idea. Very vivid, not something young impressionable minds should be confronted with in my own opinion and my son/daughter never will be on these types of games. Also keep in mind, if your kids do play and go to multi-player, then the language is whatever is out there. And unless you find servers with strict server rules for no swearing, expect non-stop cussing.

Great Game! Can't wait till COD MW2!
First, if you are thinking about buying this game after Sept 09...WAIT! COD Modern Warfare 2 will be out Nov. 10th. However, if you are on a budget and you find it discounted, go ahead and buy. The first person is awesome and but short. However, you will play it several time. The multiplayer online is great fun and addictive. I played for a year till COD WaW released. If online language is problem, don't use headsets! COD 4 and COD WaW are the best online shooters period!

Ok for 11 and up.
This is no worse than normal tv shoes families whatch like csi. There really is no "gore" just little puffs of blood. The "torture" is more just someone looks like there gonna die and you dont see anything. Not really the worse m game. I'd rate it in the lover kid age of mature. Parents should know the don't use to much language other than the d*** h*** and crap. This is good though for kids 11 and up. Parents dont worry.

outstanding single player, over hyped online
the single player is the greatest campaign in the COD franchise, the multilayer is too chaotic and face paced to be fun. content wise, there is some language off line, nothing too bad. violence bothers you stay away.

Not as bad as other M games
I dont think the game is really as violent as it looks. Yes its a little more disturbing and bloodier than the first 3 games, however its no where as bad as some other M games such as Grand Theft Auto. The game it's self is one of the best games ever made!!! plus the online is very addictive! for mature teens

Best in series.
Finally. Out of WWII and into the present. With awesome weapons and gadgets, warfare will never be the same. This T-rated series steps up to M-rated, and more blood can be seen (especially if you stand by a wall and get shot. you'll see what I mean), some strong warfare language, and standard violence. GET THIS GAME. NOW.
- I rate this title on for age 12 and give it
great
not that bad, violent, some language and there is blood and small amounts of gore, you cant walk up to somebody and blow of some fingers with a pistol, its only once in the story mode that you try to take out a dictator and its programed in that it hits him and blows of his arm. the language isnt terrible but its the equivalent to uncharted. the blood is when you shoot somone there is a blood splatter and it goes on the wall and when the body on the ground.

Best online shooter you will find
Now both the story and the online is amazingly good in this game. The only problem is if your looking for kids I wont tell you my view of age appropiate beacuse I let my kids play anything that doent have sex on it, but this does contain non-stop war violence, gore, a nuclear blast, the dying of a soldier after the nuclear blast, a man shooting himself in the head, and sniping off a man's arm. This is the best online game you will ever find.

I was a little iffy
My fourteen year old son would not leave me alone about buying call of duty 4 and how he had to have this game. At first i would not hear it at all and would completly ignore him when he tried to convince me to let him buy it. After a while i decided to give the game a try. I let him have the game and i supervised him playing for the first couple of days and it turned out not to be close to as bad as i thought. It was way less violent then i was led to belive. On the case of the game it says rated M for blood and gore. OK lets get this straight when you are playing the game there is a little bit of blood but like the person below me said it was a small red cloud that doesnt even resemble blood and the game is so fast paced you dont even notice the blood and not every person you kill gives blood. It is also rated M for "strong" language. The language is hardly "strong". It says S**t about twice a** about six times and b***ch once. This game is just like its rated T prequels just the graphics have been uped a little but not extremely. All in all and an way overly rated game that parents should really consider.

Definatly not as bad as everyone says it is
Ok i am a mom with two kids. One is 12 and the other is 4. I would not recomend this game for anyone under 11 but any 11+ kid would know that NONE of the game is real. The game is based in the Future not in the current time period. The game only shows close to modern day soilders in a made up place (have to admit does resemble the middle east) As i said and 11+ kid would know. About the language, there is a little bit of profanity but nothing major. Its not like something they dont hear their dads walking around mumbling. Anyways if your kids know not to say the curses then what have you got to worry about? Anyways you can choose the curses that the characters are aloud to say. There is a little bit of blood but only the small red cloud thay goes away in five seconds that you see in almost all video games and movies nowadays. Of course there is violence , its a war game but definatly not all everyone says it is.

Commonsense overplays the blood and gore
In my opinion CoD4 is the best of the series. Yes, there is blood on a minor scale (when you shoot someone you might be able to see a small amount of blood) but nothing anyone 13+ couldn't handle. There is an execution scene that is made a big deal of on commonsense, first off its in 1st person so you don't actually see the execution, there's no blood just 'your' eyes close and the cut scene ends. I agree that it's meant to play more on your emotions, however if you or your child is sensitive then simply leave the room or look the other direction during the cutscenes. Besides that BRILLIANT GAME! must have for

In war... the first victim is innocence!
This is an AWSOME first person shooter. A MUST HAVE for ANY GAMER! This game is war based, obviously, and is steeped in violance... but nothing extreme... the worst is blood splatter left on the walls and a mans arm being removed by your mile long, 50 Cal. shot.... And the multiplayer is amazing. I would recommend this game for any gamer interested in combat games.

I am 13 almost 14 and my parents wouldnt let me get the game for a long time. after watching me play and playing some, my dad said that it was not that bad and is letting me get it. the violence and language are harmless. the violence is not at all that bad, anyone can handle a blood splatter here and there. the language is only in the campaign mode, and it is not half as bad as what any middle schooler hears at school (dont deny it moms). all in all not half as bad as all the over-protective parents say

Review is wrong. Great game.
The game isn't for children, it also makes war seem like a simple game, but it is realistic and simulates what happens in a battle, (even though the war is made up) it also teaches people to work as a team ( if you have a kid who likes to imitate guns it uses real names so, if you don't like guns do not let them play this).

A lot of stuff
This game is violent but you should kind of know that by now so I will delve into other aspects of the game. Kids look up to military leaders, soldiers and other members of the armed forces. Now other then this being just violent and bad for kids it does teach kids or teens some things. Like the Coriolis affect in one mission. Btw thats like physics. It also teaches strategy if you're into that. It shows that nukes are really really bad and shouldn't be used because you will die. And not to propagate anything but it shows that terrorists and messed up governments are a threat and that they shouldn't be tolerated. Now I'm not saying to go to war but when a dictator like Al- Asad (bad guy from the game) takes over a middle eastern country and killing his own people who oppose him someone should kinda help out. Kinda sounds like Sadaam in Iraq during Operation Desert Storm. So if you don' want violence then don't get it. But if you want semi real life values and ideas then get it. And its also an awesome game.

All-time favorite game
This game is an incredible, easy-to-play game with amazing multiplayer and graphics along with a memorable, albeit a little short, story. The story involves 4 main terrorists called "The 4 Horsemen of the Apocolypse". They want to divert US and British troops to the Middle East while they attempt to return Russia to a communist state. There are some very memorable moments, such as gunning from an AC-150 gunship and escaping off of a sinking boat. One in particular at the end of the mission "shock and awe" is something you won't expect and you will easily remember for awhile. I played this game 2 years ago and a lot of the big moments in the game are still fresh in my mind. The game has become more violent. When you shoot somebody and they are next to a wall, expect some blood to splatter and stick to the wall. There is no gore, but the incredible realism the game offers can make the violence seem a bit rougher. The multiplayer is the true meat of this game. As you get kills, finish matches, and complete challenges like getting 50 kills with a weapon or falling from a high place and surviving, you gain exp. Once you earn enough exp, you level up and are given more weapons and new perks. Perks are advantages such as more accuracy when firing from the hip, holding your breathe longer when sniping, or dropping a live grenade upon dying. You can hold three at once and they can be used in a variety of ways to give your character a certain role on the battlefield. While you can choose between 5 classes, you can create your own with unlocked weapons and perks. There are a ton of weapons and most of them handle differently, but certain pistols and sniper rifles feel a lot alike. Also, as you get kills and headshots with weapons they upgrade, allowing you to attach new scopes, silencers, paint jobs, and more to your weapons. Once you reach the maximum level, you can start over and re-earn everything in prestige mode. It may feel odd giving up everything you've earned to start back at level one, but it gives the exp system longer legs and gives you bragging rights. Also, if you get certain kill streaks (3, 5, and 7), you get more advantages, such as seeing the enemy on radar, calling in airstrikes, or sending a helicopter to do your bidding, respectivly. The multiplayer maps are very well done for the most part, but all of them (except shipment) are found in the single player campaign. I don't know why this is a problem, but some people don't seem to like it. Also, there are no rideable vehicles, so if hopping in them in Halo of Battlefield is your favorite part of said games, you may not like it. The graphics here are amazing. All of the guns, equipment, vehicles, and buildings look nearly photo-realistic with incredibly tiny details present. Textures look like they actually have texture. If you look for the little things, you will be even more amazed. The game's presentation is incredible. Overall, it is hard to say anything bad about this game. It's incredibly balanced, has some of the best multiplayer ever, and is highly memorable. It's been out for 2 years and it's still $55 used at certain retailers, which is saying something. It feels a lot like other call of dutys, so if you like them you will love this. If you're looking for a great shooter and still haven't picked this one up, do yourself a favor. You won't be disappointed.

good for olderkids( that meens younger than tweens)
The language is what you would hear in a PG-13 movie. The blood looks fake and mild. There is only one scene where a limb falls of but it is far and you can not see inside, you can only see fake looking blood. There is a scene where a man is strapped to a chair and being punched in the face, and that isn't a good messege. All in all, I think a non-aggresive 9-year-old kid could be fine with it. It does teach about the modern warfare in the world and how bad it is.

Honestly, when you look at other reviews of the game, especially those of other kids, little justice is served in actually explaining the content of the game. Call of duty 4, most definitely, is a game that thrives off of violence. While it has moderate educational value about WWII battles, the violence and language, especially the language found on online play, is most definitely not for kids under the age of 13.
