DreamBox Learning K-2 Math

What’s the Story?

Reviewed by Jinny Gudmundsen

DREAMBOX LEARNING K-2 MATH is a subscription-based educational software game that plays directly from the internet with no download. It has a powerful recommendation engine which tracks how kids play through the educational content and adjusts on the fly to present kids with a math curriculum that it most appropriate for them. Featuring over 350 individual math activities, there are over a million different paths a child can take.

After parents create an account at www.DreamBox.com, their kids play by choosing an avatar and the theme of their adventure (animals, pixies, pirates, or dinosaurs). Then it is off to explore a cartoon world that resembles a board game where each math activity represents a space on the board. Depending on how a child does while playing a math activity, the game will offer new math activities based on past performance, so the game dynamically adjusts to the child's need.

Is It Any Good?

5

DreamBox Learning K-2 Math is phenomenal in adjusting its content to meet the needs of its users. Plus instead of simply clicking on right answers, the game draws kids into the process of making the right answer by utilizing virtual math manipulatives. Kids are motivated to play to move the story along. They also earn tokens to use at a separate carnival area full of wacky but educational games.

DreamBox Learning K-2 Math is serious educational software. The cartoony world is charming, but this is a game that is more about learning. It will work with all kids in the target range of 5-7-year-olds because if kids are good at math, they will revel in the challenges the game gives them; and if they are struggling, the game presents extra help and new ways to look at that difficult math concept. If appropriate, the game will quit the child out of a too hard activity (in a positive way) and present easier material. Parents will appreciate the Parental Dashboard, a special area where they can get feedback on how their kids are doing.
