Families Can Talk About

  • Families can talk about what makes the iPhone and the iPod Touch so appealing to kids. Is it the touch sensitivity of the screen or the ability to tilt it and have things happen on the screen. This game does not use the latter ability -- would it have been better if it had?

More on Shape Builder

What’s the Story?

SHAPE BUILDER is an iPhone/iPod Touch App that offers 120 simple jigsaw puzzles for kids ages 3-6. The puzzles have between 5-10 pieces and each piece is a different color. Kids slide them from one side over to the puzzle frame and fit them into an outlined shape without having to rotate the piece. When kids slide a piece into place, it makes a satisfying click. When completed, the puzzle transforms into an object. The puzzles are of the 26 letters of the alphabet, 24 musical instruments (with appropriate sound effects), 17 fruits and vegetables, and 16 other items including a police officer and a firetruck. Is It Any Good?

This iPhone/iPod Touch App provides excellent puzzle fun for little fingers. Because each piece is a different color, it is easy to distinguish an individual piece from the others that are lumped together on the side of the puzzle. The pieces are big enough that little fingers won't have any trouble moving them by simply placing a finger on top of one piece and sliding it along. Plus, when a youngster moves the piece close to where it belongs, it clicks into place. When the puzzle is complete, the pieces meld together and the puzzle appears to come alive as the object appears. Language skills are reinforced with spoken and written words explaining what the object is. If you want to try before you spend $.99, then download the free Shape Builder Lite which has 15 puzzles.
