Unique and Amazing Anime-Inspired Adventure
Really, deciding if you're kids can play this game all comes down to their personal tastes. I think it's a really interesting game but most early teens may find it boring or may not be able to deal with the darker themes. None of the previous games in the series have to have been played to understand the story, as the games are mostly unrelated. The game revolves around a serial murder case in a small Japanese town, and it's up to the player to find out who's doing it and stop them. This is really the largest source of violence in the game, as the actual combat isn't too gory. The player interacts with many students in their school and other people in the town (and a mysterious fox?!?), and gains social links to power up their "personas", the means of combat in the game. You can have romantic relationships with multiple girls, and there is little consequence to it. However, this is more of a gameplay contrivance than anything else, because to understand all the characters you must complete their social links, which with the girls is a relationship. There is a fair amount of innuendo and sex jokes, but no nudity and honestly nothing that wouldn't go on at a normal high school anyway. The same goes with the language, as it isn't as bad as most other M-rated games (i.e. no f-bombs). In one scene the characters(who are underage) do drink alcohol, and some items' names could be interpreted as drug-related. It should also be noted that most characters are flawed and through working together the player helps them become stronger, which is why it has good role models. Two characters both struggle with their sexuality, so younger players may be confused and not understand some of the discussions. All these are things mature teens should be able to handle. Gameplay wise, Persona 4 is like a combination of Pokemon, a dungeon crawler, and traditional JRPGS. It is not easy to play for newcomers, but if you've played games such as Chrono Trigger or the Final Fantasy Series it shouldn't be too hard. What makes the combat unique is that players collect personas, each with their own unique stats, abilities, and weaknesses, and can use them to fight or fuse them to create more powerful ones. It can be overwhelming at first, but the game does a fairly good job of easing you into it and explaining what to do. If a player is struggling, they can always "grind" and go back to previous areas to fight enemies and become stronger. All in all, I don't think I could ever write everything there is to say about this game. The bottom line is that it has a great story, interesting characters, unique gameplay, and a long-lasting adventure that any mature gamer can enjoy. Now hurry up and announce Persona 5 Atlus!!!

The opposite side of the coin.
OK, look as much as I have to agree with some of the comments, it forgets to look on ANY of the positive messages there are. Many of it is symbolism and complicated but it has a real essence to it. Many of the "kneecapped" go though emotional growth and learn to accept their negatives. Also it learns not to be fake with their personalities and "lift the fog" on them. Most the the social links reflect many real world situations like suicide, gender, and ect. but all in the end it's for a good message. So in the end it's weather the end justifies the means.

A game worth my time.
I still remember playing it when I was 10 on my PS2.I don't play Shin Megami games now but I still remember they are great games.Though cheesy and old now,the violence is still gory and relentless and many sequences are very disturbing and horrific. The entire game is very dark and is not something for young kids,Still, great imagination and twisted game play.

Wonderful game, if a little questionable in places.
I think CSM's take on Persona 4 is a little overexaggerated. I would recommend this game for kids aged 14 and up (however, every child is different; I'm 14 but I'm not easily disturbed by violence or explicit scenes. I would say if your child is particularly sensitive, wait until they're a bit older.) The plot follows teenagers who go to a Japanese high school and are trying to solve serial murders related to a TV channel where whoever appears on it dies whenever the town gets foggy. The cutscenes do have pictures of the dead bodies, but they are not especially gory. The characters are mostly very likeable and the gameplay is fun; you have to balance saving the town with your school life. (Including studying for exams!) The plot is very exciting and has plenty of twists. You fight enemies in "battles" similar to Pokemon, but these are very cartoony with no blood, despite the fact that some of the weapons are swords and knives. It's very fun and a little addictive. There's also a lot of strategy invloved, and that's when the games ia at its best. There are a few sexual scenes in this game. Not many, but enough to deserve a mention, as well as innuedo. There is a monster in a "strip club" that moves in a very sexual way, and a sauna with half naked people in. There is a quite a bit of swearing, with words like s*** and a**hole, sometimes spoken by the teachers in the school. However, the characters are all fighting for a good cause, and you do learn a bit of interesting trivia in the school sections. ( I learned something about Japanese literature!) Bottom line, this game is fantastic. The gameplay is clever and very fun, and the storyline has many twists and turns so it is very interesting to play. Whether or not the game is appropriate for your child honestly depends on their tastes and how sensitive they are. If you think they can handle the swearing and violence, then please buy Persona 4. It is one of the best games I have ever played and I would absolutely recommend it.
