What parents need to know

Parents need to know that the complex moral themes and decisions presented here may be challenging for younger players. It is possible for kids to take on either good or evil roles; the game presents both as possible options. Also, most problems are resolved by violence, regardless of whether or not the player decides to be good or evil.

  • Can be positive or negative based on players decisions--the game presents both as viable options
  • Fighting is a frequent option--the cruelty and frequency of battles can vary if the player is "light" or "dark"
  • You can gamble for a woman's freedom, choosing to set her free or keep her as a slave.

What's it about?

As with the original version of the game, STAR WARS: KNIGHTS OF THE OLD REPUBLIC II: THE SITH LORDS thrusts players into a plotline thick with twists and turns and many choices. Some of these choices lead to the "light," or good side of the force, whereas others lead down the dark path -- toward anger and ultimately evil. As the last of the Jedi knights, the player is hunted by the evil Sith, who wish to turn the player to their side or, if that fails, kill him. Along the way, the player will meet many computer-controlled characters, some who will become allies, and others who will become enemies.

The player frequently makes decisions through a text-based dialog system: Computer characters will "speak" to the player, and the player then chooses from a list of pre-determined options to reply. Based on the reply, the player can become either more "light" or "dark" -- help people or kill them, rescue or enslave, fight for those less powerful or dominate the weak, and so on.

Is it any good?

This type of gameplay has advantages and disadvantages. While it is commendable that the game stresses how actions and decisions have consequences, there is no real guidance -- it is equally possible to play a "light" or "dark" character. Parents may wish to be active participants if they let their children play this game, stepping in to discuss decisions and the implications. The game has a considerable amount of non-violent resolutions and puzzle-based challenges to test the player's skill, but there are still plenty of combat sequences. For the most part they are not overtly gory, but there is some blood.

Some parts of the plot are rather mature for young players. In one scenario, you can gamble for a woman's freedom. If you win and set her free, you gain light side points; on the dark side, you can keep her as a slave, later extorting money from her. Alcohol and gambling are mentioned. Finally, on a technical level, the game can be buggy, locking up on occasion.

What families can talk about

Families can talk about decisions and their consequences. How do you feel about the equal value placed on the light and dark sides in this game?

awesome game
This game is INCREDIBLE! While I am dismayed at some of the cut content (extra levels and features; WHY CAN'T WE GET A FINISHED PRODUCT, LUCASARTS?) the gameplay is better than the first. However, as a note to concerned parents: if a child is playing through as a male character and has the option of practicing 'Echani Dueling' in the cargo hold of the Ebon Hawk with the Handmaiden, you may want to step in. Both characters (Male character and female Handmaiden) are automatically stripped down to underwear, which, in Handmaiden's case, is a two-piece. Be wary if younger kids are playing it. Also, watch out for particularly nasty mods (such as nudity and revealing clothing mods) on the PC version. There can be some seriously immature modders out there who would love to see all in-game females naked, so be careful if your child downloads mods. Moral dilemmas can be interesting tests of your child's mindset, as well. Check their light or dark side alignment once and a while, or watch them play. Don't automatically get mad if they're dark side, just be careful if they start exhibiting...unruly behaviors. btw, why are you guys rating this 'on for age 2'? it's definitely good for tweens and up, not anything below that.

Good Game
Firstly, I'm a little surprised that nobody noticed that the game engine uses almost *exactly* the same base rules as Dungeons and Dragons. In any case, while there's violence, it's not particularly gory or traumatic, and there are maybe one or two sideways sex references in a futuristic sci-fi kind of manner. A good game, all in all

Great game, but dissapointing in ways.
I love this game, but it has been massacred. The developers were rushed in this games creation, so they cut a LOT of stuff out. (An entire planet and many other things were cut from the game.) Since it was rushed, the makers didn't have time to fix all the bugs and glitches. The consenquenses being that many side quests may not be completed and your game may crash from time to time.(It is NOT a dirty disc, do NOT clean it unless you're sure its dirty). Save very often and in different slots. (TRUST ME, DIFFERENT SLOTS FOR EACH PLANET). Despite all the flaws, the game is still great and the story (which had so much potential) is amazing. If you loved the first, play this but don't expect much of an ending.

KotOR
KotOR is a great game that is a lot of. There are lightsaber battles and blaster battles but nothing to violent, while you can choose between light or dark side it is for fun if you are 13+ you should be able to handle it. If you are a parent and your child is under this age maybe you could just moniter it and see if you think your child is mature enough to play it.
