Since making her big-screen debut in School of Rock, Miranda Cosgrove has become a very familiar face to tweens thanks to her roles on Drake & Josh and iCarly. We chatted with the young actress/singer about her role models, her favorite Web sites and movies, and more.
Common Sense Media: What messages do you think iCarly sends to kids and families?
Miranda Cosgrove: Probably just to be yourself. It\'s kind of cool because kids can send their videos in and stuff like that and actually be on the show, so they're sort of running it, in a way.
CSM: Would you say that Carly is a good role model?
Yeah, I think she is. She's a really nice character, and she just likes to express herself and have a good time. When she's faced with a problem, she usually ends up doing the right thing.
Are there any role models that you've really looked up to, career-wise?
I love Rachel McAdams. Anne Hathaway is really cool, too. I love The Devil Wears Prada.
Your show is all about the Internet -- what kind of influence do you think the Web has on kids?
I think the Internet's really huge with kids. I'm always on the Internet. I love IMing my friends and watching music videos and stuff. It's so popular. I think it's a big part of the show -- a big part of the reason why people like it.
How do you think media in general influences kids?
I've been noticing tons of shows becoming interactive, and there's so much on the Internet now -- you can pretty much find anything. ... My mom's always saying how she wasn't able to just look up stuff like I'm able to now, so it's definitely a huge difference.
Do you think that kids take away good messages overall from the media, or are there things that they should watch out for?
I think there are definitely things to watch out for, but for the most part, I think it's pretty cool -- who wouldn't want to be able to look up things and watch music videos and things so quickly?
As you've been growing up, have your parents had any media rules for you?
Kind of -- like I'm not allowed to go on the computer for a really long time [at once], like 5 hours! [Laughs.] I try to stick to just going on to normal sites -- I'll play games online and IM my friends and stuff.
Have you ever had any embarrassing moments with a movie or TV show you've been watching with your parents?
It's kind of embarrassing to watch super-girly movies with your dad! I remember I went to see the The Notebook with my mom and dad, and it was so girly. My mom and I were really into it, but my dad kept thinking it was kind of a chick flick.
What do you love about media?
I love the Internet, but I think my favorite thing to do is watch movies. I see movies constantly, and whenever a new one's coming out, I'm always planning to go see it with my friends. So that's like my favorite thing to do. Also I'm always getting in trouble because I stay up late watching movies on demand!
What are your favorite movies?
I really love The Notebook, and Mean Girls is awesome -- that's one of my favorite comedies. And as far as classic movies, I like To Kill a Mockingbird.
What about TV shows?
I watch American Idol -- I watched it this whole last season. That was cool. I was really excited David Cook won -- I like him a lot. And other than that, I watch Grey's Anatomy and stuff like that.
And Web sites?
Let's see. Probably YouTube for music videos. And then AddictingGames.com is cool.
If your family was stuck on a desert island, which form of media would you definitely want with you? Why?
I'm gonna say computer because I'd have to be able to IM my friends, or I'd go crazy!
