What parents need to know

Parents need to know that Alphabet Book is a kids app that aims help children learn to identify letters, shapes, and numbers. In the "learn" section, kids can scroll through different shapes, numbers, and letters while a narrator pronounces each item. After spending time learning each category, kids can go to the quiz section, where they will be tested on their knowledge. The quiz section displays four different cards, then asks the player to identify the correct item. Correct answers get applause; incorrect answers get a very loud and discouraging "buzz."

  • Simply touch the screen to view different cards and choose correct answers.

  • Advertisements pop up along the bottom and the top of the screen, encouraging kids to purchase other games.
  • Some concerns. The numerous pop-up ads contain links that can take kids out of the app.

Is it any good?

ALPHABET BOOK's bright colors and clear pronunciation make this app a potentially engaging way for kids to learn to identify capital letters, numbers, and shapes. The "quiz" section can be fun for kids who enjoy showing what they know, although the loud, discouraging buzz for incorrect answers can be startling. That -- and the very distracting advertisements -- prevent Alphabet Book from being a great learning tool.
