What parents need to know

Parents need to know that this app is the mobile video game version of the classic Battleship board game. While it has the same type of back-and-forth play and the same type of strategy, but it is much more visually violent than the board game. In the board game, when you score a hit, your opponent simply says, "Hit." Here, you see each hit depicted as an actual missile striking against a naval vessel, complete with smoke, fire, and loud bangs. Parents should also know that the app supports multiplayer games, but only among people on the same WiFi network (i.e., in the same house or building), or between two players who pass the same iPhone back and forth.

  • The strategy of the game may take a while to master, but learning to play is a cinch. And the interface is super simple to use.
  • Each time you launch an attack on your opponent's grid, you see missiles launched from a cannon, and if a hit is scored, you see the bomb smash into the enemy ship with a loud explosion, fire, and smoke. Hit ships rock violently on the water, and when they sink, they go down in flames. When the aircraft carrier sinks, jets on its deck slide off into the sea. In "Superweapons" mode, you can also attack with mines, bombs dropped from planes, or helicopter with machine guns that strafe bullets in long lines.

Is it any good?

This mobile version of BATTLESHIP is awesome fun. It's far more fast-paced and suspenseful than the boardgame version could ever be, and while not exactly necessary, the action animation of the ships getting sunk does add an element of excitement. But even with all those bells and whistles, it's still the classic strategic gameplay that makes playing it so enjoyable. The new game modes, which make Battleship even more video game-like, allow you to use high-powered superweapons or take multiple shots at once, and they add a nice element of variety to the app. Some people may not like that multiplayer games can only be held locally, but others will be relieved that their kids will be less likely to be playing with strangers that way. And it's nice that there's a two-player mode that can even be played on one device. All in all, this app is a spectacular adaptation of the boardgame.

Really Common Sense
i think that common sense media its a bad spin on classic games, this is battle ship people, and if technology is advanced enough to make loud booms and bright lights when you achieve something than fine by me. I would have no problem letting a two year old who understood how the game played play it, so the fact that their saying violence is an issue and only eight and up just shows me how bad the people running this company try to make small things in a game that make the game more realistic, therefore humanizing it a bit more, and, no pun intended, blowing them up.
