What parents need to know

Parents need to know that Bop It! is a digital version of the popular action-based Bop It! toy. The goal is to tap, twist, flick, spin, or swipe the right control as the announcer shouts out instructions. Other than an optional connection to Facebook, the app does not present any privacy or safety issues. The announcer can be sarcastic when you lose, but there is no foul language.

  • Bop It! has a lot of the same features as on the physical toy, and the menus are easy to navigate. The different controls can be manipulated either with the touchscreen or even by moving the iDevice itself or shouting into the microphone (if available). There is a help page that explains each gizmo and how to use it.

  • When you make a mistake, the announcer voice often makes sarcastic remarks. The language itself is clean but the attitude can be rude and obnoxious.
  • There is a link to more games from the developer. On the main menu screen is an image of a person holding the actual Bop It! toy.
  • Mostly private. Players can optionally connect to Facebook for comparing high scores with their friends, but it is not required to play the game or to see global high scores.

Is it any good?

BOP IT! is based on Hasbro's popular Bop It! toys, which shout out instructions for you to bop, twist, pull, and spin various gizmos on the device. The app does a pretty good job of capturing the fast-paced feel, particularly when you use the optional accelerometer controls in addition to the touchscreen. With several solo and multiplayer games available, there is plenty of variety. The better you do, the more gizmos are added into the mix, making it harder and harder. The graphics and audio are faithful representations of the physical toy, and the controls are all well-designed and intuitive.

Bop It! is an addictive game that turns your iPhone or iPod into a toy, but if you're playing multiplayer be careful not to drop the device while passing it back and forth.
