What parents need to know

Parents need to know that Carcassonne is an app version of the popular tile-laying board game. It is a great game to play as a family "huddled" around one iPad. However, because there is an over-the-Internet multiplayer option, there could be unwanted language and unsafe exchange of information via the built-in chat. However, that would be more of an issue with the "Quick Play," which automatically matches you to an available player. Playing with friends you've invited over email would be a safer option, and there are also solitaire modes.

  • Carcassonne includes a detailed manual, though the scoring of the game can be a little difficult to understand if you don't read the rules carefully. The app interface is very well designed and easy to use.

  • There is an icon on the main screen for Carcassonne news, which occasionally also includes information about other apps from the developer.
  • Some privacy concerns. Carcassonne allows you to play with other players on the same device, or over the Internet. You can play with people you invite via email (or who have invited you via email) or use "Quick Play" to automatically find an opponent who matches your skill level. Chatting between players is unmoderated, so playing with strangers could be an issue for children. Some safety concerns. The app will display a name and icon of your choice when you are playing against others over the Internet; using real names and photos is optional but potentially unsafe. Since the app allows kids to play with strangers with whom they can chat, the game could create some safety risks if personal information is exchanged.

Is it any good?

CARCASSONNE is a tile-laying board game: Players place square tiles on the board to complete cities, roads, cloisters, and farms around the French city of Carcassonne. While the rules are fairly easy to learn, the strategy involved can be quite deep. There is a solitaire mode that is different from the original board game, as well as a single-player mode against computer opponents. However, where the game really shines is in multiplayer mode, either sharing one device or playing against friends online.

The Carcassonne app is a faithful translation of the board game, with an easy-to-use interface, superb graphics, and understated music and sound effects. The multiplayer online mode is well-implemented and will alert you when it's your turn to play, and built-in chat makes it feel like you're sitting around the same table playing together. Although the app may seem a bit pricey, for board game enthusiasts it is well worth the price.

A really well made game, but requires patience and strategic thinking
Carcassonne is a really well made app and the only good adaptation of a board game I have found so far on the AppStore. The rules are brought across clearly in the interactive tutorial and/or the manual, and it features 3 game modes: solitaire, normal play (against an AI) and multiplay (hotseat or online). In online games, you can chat with strangers. However, given the calm and mature nature of Carcassonne, it does not attract the kind of people who would pose a danger to you. Because Carcassonne requires patience and clever thinking, its main player base is around 18+, but it's still perfectly fine for a patient child. Highly Recommended.
