What parents need to know

Parents need to know that Disney Princess - Royal Party is a celebration of Rapunzel from the movie Tangled. The other princesses are welcoming her into the princess family by baking cupcakes, getting dressed up, and having a party. This app has a lot of activities. You'll be matching the princess with her crown, reading a story about Rapunzel, coloring, getting the princesses dressed, making cupcakes, doing an art project, learning about movie storyboards, sending invitations for your own princess party, doing digital jigsaw puzzles, and creating your own party scenes.

  • The controls for the app are intuitive, but some of the screens just have too much going on. In addition, the painting scenes are too detailed for small fingers to handle. The jigsaw puzzles have two difficulty levels, which is great for both the really young kids and those getting ready for a bit more of a challenge.
  • There are swords shown throughout the app, and at one point of the story section, Rapunzel and Flynn are attacked by thieves who point arrows at them. Rapunzel fights back by pulling a thief's hair.

  • The app is entirely based on the Tangled movie, but also includes other Disney princesses.
  • Mostly private. The game has the option to create and email princess party invitations. This requires an email account on the device, and possibly a password.

Is it any good?

DISNEY PRINCESS - ROYAL PARTY has something for everyone, from reading to puzzles to dress up. The app is a bit of a hot mess in terms of organization -- it flits from activity to activity, and the pages trend toward cluttered and confusing. But your little princess probably won't care as she begs you to print out the crown activity or bake cupcakes with her. And you might not care as she's play-acting in the party scenes and tackling the puzzles. Some of the activities have one-time appeal, but there are enough things that she'll enjoy doing again and again that it could justify the price tag for princess fans.
