What parents need to know

Parents need to know that Dora's Enchanted Forest Adventures is a narrated, interactive book app with seven short chapters and a "sticker" section. Dora and Boots help King Unicornio show that he is kind, smart, brave, and strong so he can earn his crown. Kids tap on animations throughout the story to trigger Unicornio's assistance, and kids choose the answer to a riddle. The text is highlighted as Dora narrates, and she adds in a few Spanish words. The app also includes Spanish, French, and Italian versions. On the seven sticker pages, kids drag missing shapes into place, encouraged by Dora along the way. The app covers only the first part of the movie trilogy by the same name.

  • This app is clear and easy to use. Dora provides a few verbal instructions at the beginning of the story and sticker pages. Older preschoolers will find the app intuitive, with animations suggesting where kids can tap to discover the interactive elements of the story. Within the story, kids can tap on a book icon to visit a table of contents (with each chapter represented by a picture) or return to the main menu. Returning users can resume their previous story or sticker pages, or begin again. There is no variation in difficulty level.
  • A dragon threatens the characters, but they are protected by a magic shield.

  • A link to purchase more apps by the developer appears on the initial menu screen. The app is part of the huge Dora franchise, and there are DVDs and toys related to this specific adventure.

What kids can learn

2

Kids can learn about being kind, smart, brave, and strong with Dora's Enchanted Forest Adventures. While kids won’t be able to show these virtues with their magic like King Unicornio, the story sets it up so that kids can learn about and strive to have the characteristics. The interactive features get kids involved to help the future king accomplish his good acts. The narration and text highlighting can help kids follow along with the text and improve their own reading skills. Kids can also hear other languages offered by the narration. While this Dora story takes place in fantasy, kids can carry the positive messages over to real life.

What's it about?

Make magic happen with Dora on a short but sweet quest in Dora's Enchanted Forest Adventures. Kids interact with this book app by turning the pages and tapping on the sparkling purple swirls to trigger animations and sound bites. The interactions illustrate the simple story, as Dora and her friends help magical creatures in the enchanted forest, reinforcing reading and the importance of kindness, intelligence, courage, and strength.

Is it any good?

Dora fans will enjoy exploring the enchanted forest in this sweet book. The lessons of DORA'S ENCHANTED FOREST ADVENTURES are a bit obvious (and lifting a squirrel doesn't suggest enormous strength), but it's great that kids are involved every step of the way. The forest is full of magical creatures, from multicultural fairies to resourceful elves.

Even more magical creatures appear in the sticker section. The sticker pages are a nice addition to the book and provide some practice for using context and visual matching to fit puzzle pieces; younger kids may need help at first, whereas older kids might find the app repetitive. Once your kid knows the story well, try playing it in Spanish to enhance learning and fun! Overall, a sweet and simple story.

How kids will learn

Kids can learn by joining Dora and her friends on their adventure and taking to heart the characteristics that they talk about. Taking action via the interactive feature can help kids feel like they are really helping. The app allows kids to try to read the story on their own or enjoy the story and follow along with their fingers as the text highlights in the narrated mode.

How parents can help

  • Read together, focusing on the text, then reread together and focus on the interactive features so kids get maximum engagement in both reading and playing with the features.
  • Talk about the four badges and how your child could help others, be strong, etc. Can your child think of a time he or she exhibited the characteristics in the story?
