What parents need to know
Parents need to know that Elmer's Special Day is a storybook app about Elmer, a colorful elephant from a popular series of books, and his special day when his friends join him in a parade. The story has three different ways for kids to experience the book. Read to Me has a narrator read the story in an English accent, highlighting words in the text as they are read. Kids can tap the words in the text to have them repeated, or they can tap parts of the picture to learn more words. Read it Myself allows kids to read the text themselves, without a narrator. All other functionality is the same as in the Read to Me option. In Auto Play, the narrator reads the story, and the pages turn automatically. Kids can still tap on elements of the pictures to learn more words, but if the narrator is reading the text while they tap, the app just shows the word without saying it out loud. Also, kids can't tap words in the text to hear them again.
Is it any good?
ELMER'S SPECIAL DAY is a sweet story with a nice message that kids will enjoy reading. While the images themselves aren't interactive, the storybook has plenty of functionality to keep kids interested in the scenes and to help them learn to read. Kids familiar with Elmer from print books will enjoy seeing him on the screen. The three different ways to experience the book make it great for kids of a variety of ages.
