What parents need to know

Parents need to know that First Touch Soccer is a soccer simulator that closely follows the rules of the sport. The app is targeted at fans and core gamers, with a rather complicated interface and a live stream of news that affects the soccer world. It's challenging, but not frustrating -- and the pacing is wonderful. The game also does a good job of making casual fans feel at ease -- with an extensive practice mode. Users can share high scores via the Game Center social network, but participation is optional. They also can share achievements and more through Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube, but the game does not push this -- and asks up front if you'd like to disable it.

  • There are a lot of buttons on screen, which can make the interface a bit overwhelming for some players.
  • There's nothing graphic, but poor sportsmanship and illegal tackles are often shown in replays.
  • Not applicable.
  • The app has no offensive language, but a live stream of headlines may throw up some words that prompt questions from youngsters (i.e. "Wales footballer on rape charge").
  • Not applicable.
  • Minor privacy concerns. Players can opt in to Apple’s Game Center to track scores and achievements, and for some games, challenge friends. With Game Center, players can send and receive friend requests using an email address or Game Center nickname, revealing the first and last name associated with each party’s Apple ID and, in the case of email requests, the sender’s email address. Players can share achievements through Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube.

Is it any good?

Soccer sims on iDevices have been so-so so far, but FIRST TOUCH SOCCER offers almost everything the true fan could ask for. The game is challenging and well-paced, with terrific AI, impressive graphics, and (amazingly) a play-by-play/color commentating system that doesn't get annoying. It's as close to a console experience as we've seen on an iOS system. Additionally, there's a headline feed of soccer-themed stories (which sometimes can be a bit much for younger players). There are also several customization options and a ton of teams, game modes, and other gameplay options. The interface is a bit busy, but in the end, this is a game that truly feels like a team experience -- which makes it stand above most of its competition.
