Parents need to know that Fly Control HD has a lowbrow, gross-out sense of humor (but less so than the old non-HD iPhone version of Fly Control, which featured some disgusting roadkill as a meal). You need to direct flies to their dinners, which are basically rotting food bits and trash. The artwork is all very cartoony, though, which cuts down on the ick-factor considerably. And the game itself is quite challenging, requiring a good deal of concentration and alertness. You do get to squish some bugs with your finger, though, which is still kind of yucky. Players can opt-in to Open Feint, which, since it has live unmoderated chat, we don't recommend for kids.
FLY CONTROL HD is a much better game than you probably think. Yes, it's got a nasty premise -- help flies eat rotten garbage -- but there's a good deal of strategy to the game, and it builds to such a fast chaotic pace that it practically becomes an action game. You can earn coins to buy power-ups and bonuses. And once you unlock them, you can actually even play as other insects, like butterflies. There's also a neat head-to-head mode that two people can play on the same iPad. And with the colorful, cartoony graphics, even the grossest bits of the game -- probably the bug-squashing -- doesn't really look too horrible.
