What parents need to know

Parents need to know that Frontline Commando is a freemium action game that contains a fair bit of violence. Blood flows when you take aim at enemies and the frequent use of the sniper rifle lets you see that close up. The game is also set up to prompt players to purchase in-game currency to advance. While it's not impossible to move deep into the game without spending cash, it's extraordinarily difficult. Users can share high scores via the Game Center social network, but participation is optional.

  • Health doesn't regenerate in this game, so if you're out of health kits, you won't last long. The enemies always vastly outnumber the player and winning battles is a challenge.
  • Players engage in a non-stop series of battles, shooting enemies with shotguns, automatic weapons, sniper rifles, and other weapons, such as hand grenades. There is a shower of blood when enemy soldiers are shot -- and the screen turns red when players are hit.

  • In order to obtain higher-grade weapons (or, more importantly, health kits), you'll need to purchase them using in-game cash. The game is stingy in handing that out, but offers a high-profile opportunity to spend real-world dollars to buy it.
  • Some privacy concerns. Players can opt in to Apple's Game Center to track scores and achievements, and for some games, challenge friends. Players can send and receive friend requests using an email address or Game Center nickname, revealing the first and last name associated with each party's Apple ID and, in the case of email requests, the sender's email address. With iOS 5, players can opt to have a private or public profile, which can include a photo. With a public profile, your real name is visible to all other players, and Game Center will recommend you to other players using your real name. With a private profile, only your friends can see your real name, and Game Center will not recommend you to other players.

Is it any good?

FRONTLINE COMMANDO doesn't skimp on the action genre cliches, but it's still not a bad game on its merits. However, its over-reliance on the freemium model saps a good deal of the fun. The game is weighted in the company's favor and it's extremely difficult to advance too far without having to purchase in-game cash. That's fine if you're prepared for it going in, but it's something parents of teens might not realize.

The game, while difficult, is a fun arcade shooter, though. The controls are a bit over-complicated, but not impossible to figure out. And as long as you've got cash and the right weapon in hand, you'll have a blast. But it's only when you have to decide whether to tap your credit card that you'll really know how much fun you're having.
