What parents need to know

Parents need to know that Great Migrations is a line-drawing game based on the National Geographic TV show of the same name. Players help waves of Monarch butterflies, salmon, zebras, and red crabs successfully complete their migration cycles by tracing the best routes to guide them clear of predators and other hazards. Animals can be killed along the way and their corpses are shown for a few seconds, which might disturb very young players. There ads for the TV show (and, strangely, Honda cars) on the main menu.

  • The controls are perfectly suited to the iPad. Players drag their finger to create a path for the animals that guides them to safety while avoiding obstacles and predators. There are four difficulty modes to choose from.
  • When an animal is killed the corpse remains on the screen for a few seconds in a small pool of blood. When predators attack, a blood-colored slashing animation occurs over the victim.

Is it any good?

GREAT MIGRATIONS is a fun and challenging game that entertains players while teaching them about one of the truly remarkable feats of nature. There's plenty to keep a child interested (including different terrains, plenty of predators and power-ups, four modes of difficulty to master, and an endless mode), and in between levels the game uses maps and text to describe the animals' migration route and what hazards they're likely to face along the way. For families who have watched the TV show, this is a great extention.
