What parents need to know

Parents need to know that Hero Princess is an arcade-style game that pits a plucky princess against hordes of angry vikings trying to scale the wall of her castle. She defends herself by dropping objects onto the heads of her enemies as they climb up a series of ladders laid out before her. There's inherent violence in that concept, but it's very cartoony and unrealistic. The game ends when a viking reaches the top of the castle wall and grabs the princess. Users can share high scores via the Game Center social network, but participation is optional. A high-definition version of the game called Hero Princess HD is also available for the iPad.

  • The controls are very simple -- easy to learn and use. The game is mostly about being very fast as you run back and forth from one ladder to another. The speed becomes much more challenging as you go, but early levels are relatively easy.
  • Your princess defends her castle by dropping rocks on the helmeted heads of invading vikings as they attempt to scale ladders. Power-ups sometimes allow her to use more fantastical items like footballs or frogs. Stronger vikings need to be shaken off their ladders. If a viking reaches the top, he carries the princess away, and the game is over.

  • Minor privacy concerns. Players can opt in to Apple’s Game Center to track scores and achievements, and for some games, challenge friends. With Game Center, players can send and receive friend requests using an email address or Game Center nickname, revealing the first and last name associated with each party’s Apple ID and, in the case of email requests, the sender’s email address.

Is it any good?

HERO PRINCESS is the kind of addictive arcade game that players could have spent hundred of quarters on back in the old days of stand-up video games. While there's just one screen and one basic goal (knock the vikings off their ladders before they reach the top), it's a whole lot of fun, and you'll want to keep trying to beat your previous score. The game keeps from getting dull by introducing newer (and tougher) enemies as you go along, including ones that have shields, ones that need to be shaken from their ladders, and super-tough ghost vikings. There are also fun power-ups that can do things like freeze the baddies or rain frogs down upon them.
