What parents need to know

Parents need to know that while JellyCar 3 is referred to by some as a physics puzzle game, it is really an extremely challenging platforming game with some physics elements. You need to navigate a gelatinous car from one end of a course to the other, but your vehicle bounces, wobbles, and skids in ways that make it incredibly difficult to control. That sort of challenge is the appeal of the game for many of its fans, but is likely to frustrate young kids who are attracted by the playful look of the app.

  • The JellyCar series has always been notoriously difficult, and this new edition is no different. While there are just three simple controls (forward, back, and tilt), the levels are challenging to a frustrating degree. And unlike in previous JellyCar editions, this time you can't access new levels until you unlock them by beating the previous ones.

Is it any good?

There's no denying that JELLYCAR 3 has an appealing look, clever sound effects, and a great concept (as did its predecessors), but unless you have the steady hands of a surgeon or the patience of a Zen monk, you're probably going to be frustrated by it. Oh, there's a nice bit of strategy involved, especially in later levels, as the obstacles on the courses become trickier and the paths less obvious. And the ability to design your own jelly vehicle is a fun addition. But it still feels way too hard. Then again, so did the first two JellyCar games, and they were huge hits. Basically, you need to enjoy the struggle. If you do, you'll get what you want here. If you don't, you may end up kicking your iPad. It's also odd that this third edition does not have the popular Level Creator that the second one did. Losing that creative aspect (and the ability to create a course you might actually be able to finish) seems like a big omission.

Great app
My 3-year old loves this game. It has improved his fine motor skills and his patience! He has beaten all the levels and found the secret exits too...I hope they add more soon because this app has helped him so much!
