What parents need to know

Parents need to know that Journey to the Exoplanets provides a lush cornucopia of knowledge about outer space beyond the boundaries of our solar system. Through interactive images and a whole lot of reading, users can learn a great deal about our universe. Its detailed scientific nature, however, does mean that the app is better suited to older kids.

  • Navigating the app is not very difficult, though some crashes were experienced in our test use. There are interactive elements that kids should enjoy, but keep in mind that the reading level is advanced.

Is it any good?

JOURNEY TO THE EXOPLANETS works like an astronomy textbook from the future. The gorgeous imagery of far off stars and planets, combined with in-depth audio commentary and some entertaining interactive bits, make the app a wonderful source for anybody with a yearning to learn about the universe. In terms of the interactive material, the highlight is definitely the "build your own planet" feature. By selecting different criteria, like a planet's size and elemental makeup, you can see what your imaginary planet would actually look like. The app is very text-heavy, though, so people who aren't inclined to read through thousands of words of science writing may not be able to get the most out of their exoplanet journey.
