What parents need to know

Parents need to know that The Little Mermaid - Auryn is a storybook app that retells Hans Christian Andersen's original, dark, and sometimes gruesome version of the classic fairy tale. Be aware that there is violence in the story (though none depicted in the illustrations) and that the ending is extremely tragic.

  • The app is simple and easy to use.
  • No violence is depicted visually, but this is the original Hans Christian Andersen version of the tale, which has some very gruesome moments: The witch cuts the mermaid's tongue off, the mermaid's sisters try to convince her to spill the prince's blood with a huge knife, and [SPOILER ALERT] the mermaid dies.
  • Though it is not sexual in nature, topless mermaids are depicted in the painted illustrations. They are young (i.e., undeveloped) mermaids.
  • Not applicable.

Is it any good?

As an interactive book, Auryn Inc.'s version of THE LITTLE MERMAID is not overly interactive, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. Basically, you get the story (which is dark, but classic), read beautifully by a great narrator, and accompanied by absolutely gorgeous illustrations from artist Lisbeth Zwerger. But there are some lovely atmospheric touches added in, too: You can tap water anywhere to create ripples, or drag your finger along the screen to stir up a school of fish. There's a nice setup in which a page of text is followed by a full-page illustration, and you can choose to stay and follow the text until the narrator finishes the page, or skip past to the picture, so you can admire and play with it while you listen to the narration.
