What parents need to know

Parents need to know that Little Pim Spanish is an app adaptation of the popular DVD series that helps kids learn 54 Spanish words and phrases related to waking up, eating and drinking, and playtime. For each of these three categories, there are three levels of simple games: kids learn nouns in the first level, verbs in the second, and short phrases with nouns and verbs in the third. The terms are taught using pictures, written words, verbal cues, and sometimes animations, all with liberal praise from Pim. Each game involves selecting a picture to match the written or spoken word or complete the phrase. The picture must be selected three times for reinforcement before progressing to the next game or level. The games do not depend on reading, but they will be easier for kids who can recognize words and patterns.

  • With just a few exceptions, Little Pim talks the player through every step of this game. Detailed instructions and a full list and translation of the 54 words and phrases are also included in a menu off the main screen. The terms are presented in three categories, with three levels of games in each category. Each level contains three games to learn and reinforce the terms: level one teaches nouns (for example, "el sofá"), level two teaches verbs ("él sienta"), and level three teaches phrases that put the nouns and verbs together ("él sienta en el sofá"). One level must be completed in order to progress to the next level in that category. The games involve selecting the correct picture to match or complete the word or phrase. There is no penalty for incorrect answers. Since each level introduces three words or phrases, there is lots of room to play the games again and again to learn all the words. Little Pim's Spanish voice sounds different than his normal voice, but the words are clear and well-accented.

  • A hidden menu from the main page has a link to more apps by the developer.
  • Minor safety concerns. Players can send emails to share the app from the information menu, but this menu is hidden on the main screen.

Is it any good?

LITTLE PIM SPANISH is an excellent way for kids to get early exposure to Spanish and develop a good vocabulary. The engaging games are simple but fun, with enough variety to keep kids stimulated and enough familiarity and repetition to facilitate learning. The progression from nouns to verbs to phrases allows kids to learn words in relation to one another, and the pictures put the words in context. The pictures also help develop pattern recognition, particularly for the combination of words into phrases. All the while, Little Pim provides ample encouragement and praise. ¡Muy divertido!
