What parents need to know

Parents need to know that Love To Count by Pirate Trio teach kids why numbers have meaning and how basic math problems and concepts help us solve basic questions of everyday life. Through games such as splitting a pizza evenly for the pirates or counting the number of fish caught (all based on the pirate theme of the Pirate Trio) kids ages 4 to 7 practice math skills and earn virtual rewards. Kids can practice math that they need now or are likely to need soon in life, including telling left hand from right hand, playing dominoes by matching up number dots, or adding on a chalkboard. Multiple kids can have accounts on this app.

  • Very easy to use. Voice instructions and encouraging words help move the games along. Clear, bright numbers and images keep kids engaged.

Is it any good?

The genius idea behind LOVE TO COUNT BY PIRATE TRIO is that even young kids need to know why math is relevant to everyday life in order to be motivated to learn how to use numbers. And making the math game situations relate to pirates' everyday lives -- playing dominoes, catching fish -- just makes it all the more fun and engaging. Kids also seem to really enjoy the reward of building a "password" by finishing each level in the game to unlock a treasure chest and choosing a prize (an image of a pirate bear or a book, for example). The $3.99 price is well worth it, especially if more than one kid will be using this app.
