What parents need to know

Parents need to know that MADDEN NFL 12 by EA SPORTS™ For iPad is the latest installment of this annualized football simulator. It's appropriate for all ages content-wise, but requires coordination and can be complicated, which makes it a poor choice for young players. While less in-depth than the console version, it still is a very detailed game with many advanced features, including the ability to sign, release, and trade players. The game does not offer a multiplayer mode, but many features require players to sign into EA's social network, called Origin.

  • The game's tutorials aren't heavily promoted, so people unfamiliar with the Madden play-style might miss them. The game also is not as intuitive as you might hope for with an iPad game, but is relatively easy to control with a little practice.
  • Like any NFL game, players tackle each other.

  • The game features a prominent link in the menu advertising other EA apps for sale.
  • Some privacy concerns. Users can opt-in to EA's Origin service to gain access to leaderboards and a friends list. This requires users to submit their email address. Users are also able to connect with friends on Facebook, Gmail, and their contact list through Origin; they can also invite friends through SMS and email. The profile on Origin also allows users to enter their real name, mobile number, image, and more.

Is it any good?

Electronic Arts is still struggling to perfect MADDEN on iDevices -- and this year's installment of the game shows the company has a way to go before it does so. MADDEN NFL 12 BY EA SPORTS FOR IPAD is sluggish and choppy and the constant stuttering completely removes players from the sense of realism the rest of the game tries to create. The graphics are certainly good enough (though still pale to the console version) and the controls are fine. And the plenitude of in-depth options will keep the most die-hard fan busy, but it's not the most welcoming of apps to beginners and the lack of a multiplayer mode continues to be a baffling omission.
