### What parents need to know

Parents need to know that MathKnack Genius is a cross between a puzzle game and a math drill. The game presents an equation with the operators (plus or minus signs, etc.) missing and players must fill in these missing symbols. Users can choose to have equations with two to four numbers and can select one of three difficulty levels (Student, Graduate, and Genius). Kids can post their scores on Facebook if they have an account.

• The game has a tutorial to explain the basics. The game uses three different difficulty levels, which dramatically changes the skill level required. The only flaw is that it can be tricky to physically place the operators in the right spot, especially the parenthesis.

• Pretty safe. However, the game has the option of posting scores to Facebook. This requires a username and password.

### Is it any good?

MATHKNACK GENIUS is a strangely compelling math game for anyone who enjoys a puzzle challenge. Players can choose equations with two to four numbers. Choosing two numbers creates a simple equation requiring just the
knowledge of basic number operations. As you increase the number of
operators and difficulty, the equations become more complex and users
will need to understand the order of operations, as well as handling
negative and real numbers. The game has three modes. The first is a
"Time Trial" where you complete 10 equations as quickly as possible. The
second is "Long Run" where you have two minutes to complete as many
equations as possible. The third is "Head-to-Head" where you compete
against another person on the same device. The third mode is best suited
to the larger iPad screen. The game assigns a rank based on the scores achieved at each level of difficulty and the hardest levels are extremely difficult to achieve.

This is a game that can be enjoyed by a variety of ages and skill levels. The app is well-designed and a great value, especially for families with school-aged children who need some math practice.
