What parents need to know

Parents need to know that NATURE MOBILE - Birds Pro HD - for iPhone and iPad is a bird identification guide that focuses on European birds, with more than 230 species cataloged. Kids can browse more than 1,500 photographs, listen to bird calls, and test their knowledge with quizzes. Users may submit their own bird photos. Also, the app uses Open Feint leaderboards but does not support Open Feint's chat option.

  • The birds are arranged alphabetically in a list with a color photo thumbnail for each. It's easy to search for a bird if you already know what you're looking for, but the app is missing the means to identify birds visually, making it a straight encyclopedia rather than a field guide.
  • Not applicable.
  • There is a section on bird reproduction, but it's limited to information like what the eggs look like, how many broods per year, and what time of year is mating season.
  • Not applicable.
  • A link on the main menu leads to more apps from the developer.
  • Some privacy concerns. Users can opt in to Open Feint, an interactive network, to post their quiz scores to leaderboards. Open Feint allows users to upload real avatar photos, post on message boards, connect with Facebook friends or Twitter followers, and access live chat with strangers, but this app does not support the chat option. When users click on the back of a photo in the app they see the photo credit and
are prompted to send in their own photos to be included in the app. Some safety concerns. If users opt in to Open Feint they can choose to share their personal information with strangers.

Is it any good?

The highlight of NATURE MOBILE - BIRD PRO HD - FOR IPHONE AND IPAD is its library of beautiful high-definition photographs, many of which have been submitted by users. There are basic facts about each bird too, but users must follow a link to Wikipedia to learn more, which requires an Internet connection. Users can browse the list of birds alphabetically, or search for a specific bird by name. Birds Pro HD is a decent encyclopedia for the casual bird enthusiast. For a more comprehensive bird app, try the Audubon Society's Field Guide apps, which also include birdwatching tips and the ability to identify unknown birds by appearance.
