What parents need to know

Parents need to know that Nearparent is a free "trusted community help app" that parents can use to create a list of adults that their kid can simultaneously notify from their own mobile device if they need to find quick help for things like forgetting house keys, missing the bus, or other important but not emergency needs. The adults can see the location of the kid on a map on their own device. Whoever can respond to the call for help can tell the kid and the other adults on the trusted adult list that they're nearby and can respond. Kids can also use the app just to check in with parents to let them know where they're at and that all is well.

  • Once you set up the child's account for their mobile device and their network of trusted adults, the app is easy to use and the alerts are clearly explained. Green means the kid is checking in with parent, no alert. Yellow, small need alert. Red, more urgent (but no emergency) alert.

  • Some privacy concerns. Parents need to choose the "trusted adults" list carefully, as these adults will be able to see the child's location. This app is not to be used for emergency situations, and it should not give parents a false sense of safety that their child can be alone more than is age appropriate with or without the use of this app.

Is it any good?

As long as NEARPARENT doesn't give parents or kids an overly confident sense of security, this app can be one of many tools parents can use to help keep kids connected with trusted adults and safer in times of need. Remind your child that this app is not for serious emergencies, and to always call 911 if they are ever in immediate danger. The app is free, but parents can choose to donate to a children's charity when an alert is resolved.
