What parents need to know

Parents need to know that NFL Kicker 13 is a sports/arcade game that lets players become virtual field goal kickers. The game is free of the rough tackles other NFL games have, as there's simply a kicker and goalposts on screen. The trick is getting the ball through the uprights with a wind blowing and the distance being set farther and farther away. In-game cheerleaders are dressed in midriff- and cleavage-baring attire, and there is a push for in-app purchases. Players using an iOS device can share high scores via the Game Center social network, but participation is optional.

    Some privacy concerns. Players can opt in to Apple's Game Center to track scores and achievements, and for some games, challenge friends. Players can send and receive friend requests using an email address or Game Center nickname, revealing the first and last name associated with each party's Apple ID and, in the case of email requests, the sender's email address. Players can opt to have a private or public profile, which can include a photo. With a public profile, your real name is visible to all other players, and Game Center will recommend you to other players using your real name. With a private profile, only your friends can see your real name, and Game Center will not recommend you to other players.

What's it about?

Kids attempt field goals from different angles and positions, rather than simply hitting the uprights straight on. The area between the goalposts is split into color-coded regions that give players different points. Kids kick by swiping the screen; swiping too fast results in short kicks. As the game progresses, the wind increases (as does the distance to the goal), making it trickier. Swiping the screen left and right while the ball is in flight helps you guide it. Other modes include one where you're forced to punt, rather than placekick. 

Is it any good?

 

While the game might push in-app purchases and upgrades a little too aggressively, there's a whole lot to like about NFL Kicker 13. It's a game that's easy to grasp, that rewards dedication, and that offers a lot for the money. With a variety of play modes and nearly unlimited upgrades, if you're interested in building out your stadium, it doesn't get boring.

And since it's an NFL-sanctioned product, you can pick your favorite team, your preferred uniform style and either play as yourself or fantasy-play as your favorite player. It's a simple game that offers just enough to keep you hooked for quite a while.
