What parents need to know

Parents need to know that Picasso - Kids Paint Magic! is a simple drawing app that lets kids create psychedelic-looking images using three varieties of neon-colored "magic paint." The app is free to download, but text ads run continuously along the top of the screen. Kids can save images to the device, and share them through a variety of social media including Facebook, Twitter, Google+, Picasa, and Flickr.

  • The app is extremely simplistic, which makes it easy to use. However, users will still have to figure a few things out by trial and error since there's no guide.

What's it about?

In Picasso - Kids Paint Magic! kids can drag or tap the screen to create glittering drawings that resemble neon signs. Fun lightsaber-like sound effects accompany each swipe. Kids can import photos from the device's gallery and edit them, and finished creations can be saved and shared through a variety of social media and photo-sharing sites including Facebook, Twitter, Picasa, and Flickr.

Is it any good?

PICASSO - KIDS PAINT MAGIC! is a one-trick pony that relies on the gimmick of glittery rainbow-colored "magic paint" to draw kids in. Otherwise it's a very simple app. Kids can create lines and dots, but the app lacks advanced features such as the ability to adjust the width of the lines, or even choose specific colors (colors are rendered in a rainbow pattern that is apparently random). There's no tutorial, so kids will have to discover how the app works by trial and error. This isn't a huge flaw given the app's simplicity, but certain things -- like the fact that if you change the background color it erases whatever's on the screen at the time -- would be nice to know ahead of time.
