What parents need to know

Parents need to know that Pinch 2 HD is a charming puzzle game that involves getting colored orbs to a goal by combining and separating orbs into appropriate sizes and colors. The game is challenging but controls are simple. There are some privacy concerns with the use of Game Center, which is optional; the app also contains links to the publisher's website and external social networks. Although free, players will most likely want to pay the $4.99 for additional levels.

  • The game is very easy to learn. Each time a new puzzle feature is introduced, there is a tutorial screen before the level starts. Players solve puzzles by dragging the orbs to the goal, and pinching and pulling to combine or separate orbs.
  • In some puzzles there are pits that the orbs can fall into, but the orbs reappear immediately after falling in.

  • The free portion of Pinch 2 HD contains 20 levels. The rest of the app, an additional 80 levels with different types of puzzles, costs $4.99 and can be purchased within the app. The other portions aren't necessary to play the game, but they do provide more challenge after solving the first 20. There are also links to the developer's other apps, and their Facebook and Twitter pages.
  • Minor privacy concerns. Players can opt in to Apple’s Game Center to track scores and achievements. With Game Center, players can send and receive friend requests using an email address or Game Center nickname, revealing the first and last name associated with each party’s Apple ID and, in the case of email requests, the sender’s email address.

Is it any good?

PINCH 2 HD is an iPad-only puzzle game that makes great use of the touch screen and larger display. Players must get various colored orbs to a goal by sliding them around; the trick is that there are gates and pits that can only be crossed if the orb is the right size. Pinching two orbs together combines them into a larger size, and pulling one apart divides it into two smaller orbs.

Later puzzles include mixing various colors, chutes that transport orbs into different rooms, and silver orbs that cannot be combined or separated. The free version only comes with 20 puzzles, but the $4.99 cost of the additional levels is well worth it.
