What parents need to know

Parents need to know that Puffle Launch brings a favorite game from the Club Penguin website to mobile devices. The app mirrors the website's Puffle Launch game, in which kids aim and blast a puffle through scenes to unlock new levels and earn coins. The coins kids earn on the app are transferred to their Club Penguin accounts, if they have an account (or make one from the app). There are 24 levels of play and three different modes. More than one kid can play on this app and have the coins transferred to different penguin accounts.

    Easy to use, but for kids who play the same game on the Club Penguin website it may take a while to get used to controlling the app with their fingers instead of computer arrow keys. If more than one kid plays on this app, they need to remember to log in and out for coins to post to the right penguin.

    The little puffles do get launched across the sky and sometimes fall into the water, but they have helmets on and aren't hurt when they fall.

    The entire app is a de facto ad for the larger Club Penguin site, and the information screen encourages kids to "Play clubpenguin.com" and "Be part of the adventure!" If your kid doesn't have a penguin on Club Penguin, you can't transfer the coins earned on the app to buy stuff for the penguin on the website. A "Create a Penguin" tab allows kids to create a penguin via the app (with a parent's approval). Kids who are on Club Penguin get more features, including puffle options, with a paid membership. The app also includes the Disney logo and website URL, but it does not actually link to the site.

Is it any good?

 

PUFFLE LAUNCH is a cute point and launch game that will likely delight kids already familiar with Club Penguin, and it may make new fans out of kids not yet introduced to these penguin pets on the popular Disney virtual world site. Besides launching the adorable puffles across colorful scenes and avoiding falling into the water, a favorite feature of this app for Club Penguin fans will likely be the ability to earn coins that are transferred to kids' accounts on the companion website to buy stuff for their penguins. For kids who are used to playing this game on the website and using keyboard arrow keys, switching to swiping the mobile screen to aim the puffle may be tricky at first.
