What parents need to know

Parents need to know that Real Racing 2 is an incredibly realistic racing sim that features real car models and in-app purchases. The commercial quality of the real-world car manufacturers is not a particularly big deal as it adds to the game's realism, but players who want to upgrade can take a shortcut by buying in-game funds with real world money. Violence isn't an issue as all that happens if you drive into an opponent or the wall is the car slows down. There are no overly dramatic crashes here. The game offers multiplayer through Game Center, but the only personalized information offered is whatever nickname the player has chosen in that service.

  • Controlling the cars is easy, and the game ramps up difficulty at a good pace so as not to frustrate players.

  • The app uses real car makes and models, such as Nissan, Volkswagen, Jaguar, and more, for its races. The developer also uses push notifications on the menu screen to promote sales of its apps and new releases. And the game offers in-app purchases of game money to buy more cars.
  • Minor privacy concerns. Players can opt in to Apple’s Game Center to track scores and achievements, and for some games (including this one), challenge friends. Players can send and receive friend requests using an email address or Game Center nickname, revealing the first and last name associated with each party’s Apple ID and, in the case of email requests, the sender’s email address. With iOS 5, players can opt to have a private or public profile, which can include a photo. With a public profile, your real name is visible to all other players, and Game Center will recommend you to other players using your real name. With a private profile, only your friends can see your real name, and Game Center will not recommend you to other players.

Is it any good?

Firemint set the bar for racing sims on iDevices -- and it has raised it considerably with REAL RACING 2. The game is the closest you'll get to a Forza title in the app store and is sure to overjoy racing fans. The car models are spectacular, the tracks are long and detailed, and (most importantly) the controls are seamless. That's key, as they're so often overly complicated in racers.

The in-app purchase option is annoying, but meant solely as a shortcut for people who don't want to wait to get a muscle car. It's hardly essential. And the multiplayer mode, through Game Center, works without a flaw. Bottom line: This is a game that redefines quality in the app racing genre.
