What parents need to know

Parents need to know that Science Fun to Go is a free science app by Seymour Simon, a children's science book author. Much of the content here is cross-posted from his website SeymourSimon.com. There's a blog, jokes and riddles, and a "Fact or Fiction" quiz. You can purchase books for up to $3.99 each through this app, but if you're on an Android device you'll have to log in to your Facebook account first, and then pay through Paypal. On iDevices the books are bought through an an-app purchase.

  • It's easy to navigate around the few features here. But kids do need to be able to read independently to use much of this site, even though a lot of the science information here is geared toward younger children. Some glitchy videos didn't play during our review on an Android device, and the app wouldn't load at all on our iPad. The process to purchase books on an Android device was clunky.

  • You have to buy the books to read them (up to $3.99 each at the time of this review), and for the Android version, the only way to buy them is to sign up on the site through Facebook and pay via PayPal. On iOS devices the books are available as in-app purchases.
  • To read the books on this app, if you're on an Android device you'll first need to sign up by using your Facebook login.

Is it any good?

SCIENCE FUN TO GO contains solid, interesting science information, although it's hard to discern what age group it's really targeting. For the most part, kids need to be independent readers to utilize most of this site. But a lot of the science information, jokes and riddles, and books the site is selling seem geared toward younger grade school-age kids who may or may not be able to read the large amounts of text here easily. A lot of the material here can also be found on Mr. Simon's website. Some videos on the app were glitchy and wouldn't play on our Android device during our review, and the process to purchase books on an Android device was somewhat clunky.
