What parents need to know

Parents need to know that Spirit HD has the feel of an old-school arcade game, but plays in a uniquely modern fashion. As a ghost-like character, you fly through space, leaving a trail of energy behind you. When you fly in a circle, so that your energy trail overlaps itself, you create a black hole. You need to use those black holes to suck up the bad guys, some of whom have smaller captive spirits in tow (that you need to rescue, of course).

  • The controls are amazingly simple and smooth -- just move your finger anywhere on the screen and the "spirit" will mimic those movements. The game itself can be quite challenging, though, especially on later levels.
  • You create black-hole-like vortexes to suck enemies into. Some enemies fire lasers -- when they hit  you, you simply freeze in space and disappear.

Is it any good?

With its gridded layout and neon-line characters, SPIRIT HD looks like a throwback to the days of the original Tron -- and we mean that in the most positive of ways. It's visual simplicity is really quite beautiful. And the gameplay is top-notch. Controlling your ghost by moving your finger anywhere on the screen feels like conducting a symphony. The challenge factor is pretty high, especially in later levels, but the game is undeniably fun. And you can definitely hone your spirit-flying skills as you go. It's fantastic arcade action that looks and feels like a work of art -- truly unique and wonderful.
