What parents need to know
Parents need to know that Talking Rex the Dinosaur is a virtual pet program. A fearsome Tyrannosaurus Rex is your virtual pet of sorts, who will parrot your every word in a deep, rumbling voice. Kids will enjoy hearing their voices manipulated to this degree, but might be frightened by some of the actions of the T. Rex on screen. The "fight" button, which summons another dinosaur, is violent. Anyone who pokes the screen several times will anger the dinosaur, resulting in the camera zooming in on his mouth as he roars in fury. Touching the T. Rex's tail also results in him trying to "bite" you. The dinosaur does respond to affection, though, rumbling with pleasure when petted and happily playing catch with a tossed bone.
What kids can learn
Talking Rex the Dinosaur wasn't created with educational intent, and we don't recommend it for learning. However, some teachers have noted it can be useful for special needs students who aren't speaking yet or who may have trouble forming words correctly.
What's it about?
Users speak to an animated Tyrannosaurus Rex and hear their words echoed back to them in a modified, deeper voice. While that's the main thrust of this app, you can also "reward" your dino with a tossed steak or bone by pressing buttons in the lower right corner of the screen -- or pit him in a fight with another dinosaur by pressing a boxing glove icon. The creature responds to touch, as well. Gently rubbing him elicits a growl of contentment, but poking him too aggressively causes him to roar in fury.
Is it any good?
There's really nothing in TALKING REX THE DINOSAUR that Outfit7 hasn't done in any of its six other "Talking Friends" apps. The main purpose of the series is for an animated on-screen character to repeat what you say to it in an altered voice. It's a fun diversion, with a few features thrown in on the side -- like feeding your dino a steak or playing a bit of catch with it -- but it's a one-trick pony that eventually does get old (generally much faster for adults than for kids). Still, the fierce T. Rex is bound to catch the eye of young dinosaur enthusiasts. The intensity of the animations might be a bit too much for the very young ones, though.

No bad words built in, but people can make Talking Rex say some. If you press the glove button, then Rex will bite a dino. If you poke him, he'll roar in your head. GamerQuinn out.
