What parents need to know

Parents need to know that The Three Little Pigs, told by Holly Hunter is an adaptation of the children's classic that takes certain story-telling liberties in an attempt to modernize the tale. The wolf uses smooth-talking come-on lines to the pigs and displays violent reactions to their rejections. This could bring to mind some
thoughts of an abusive suitor; but that's a judgment call only parents can
make. This version also has the wolf devouring two of the pigs, and ultimately he falls into a pot of boiling water and dies. The story lets users read the book at their own pace with no audio or watch a 12-minute video narrated by actress Holly Hunter. Parents can also record the story in their own voice. The story and video both feature charming artwork.

  • Navigating the pages of the book is very intuitive and easy.
  • Storybook violence that might be more graphic than most parents recall. The wolf successfully devours two of the little pigs -- and then is subjected to a series of comical abuses (such as being run over by a butter churn) before ultimately falling into a pot of boiling water and being cooked.
  • The wolf, as presented in this story, is something of a smooth talker and uses lines that border on seduction when knocking on the pigs' doors. For example, when trying to get into the straw house of one pig, he coos "Whatcha been doin' with yourself - you're looking so fine. Won't you let me in?"
  • Not applicable.

Is it any good?

Ruckus Media does a great job with children's tales, and this version of The Three Little Pigs, told by Holly Hunter is another winner, but comes with one concerning factor. On the plus side, Hunter's reading of the story is charming and engaging and the artwork that accompanies the video is wonderful. The ability to read and record the story in your own voice is another smart addition -- as it lets parents tell a story to their kids even when they're not around. The concern arises from the wolf's smooth-talking come-on lines to the pigs, which are followed by his violent reactions to their rejections; and could bring to mind some thoughts of an abusive suitor. It makes this book not quite perfect.
