What parents need to know

Parents need to know that TODDLER PRESCHOOL QUIZZING is an easy app for the very young to figure out. For example, three stars appear, a voice says "find the yellow star," and once that object is selected there's immediate applause or kids shouting "yay!" For a wrong selection the object is named, disappears, and the voice says "try again." If the feature is turned on, kids can earn virtual stickers and place them on a page themselves. To select which of the 30 categories of objects your child will see, parents need to hold down a bar at the bottom of the title page. Most categories can be tackled by the preschool set except the fractions, Roman numerals, trees, and flowers. Parents can also choose from three languages -- English, Spanish, or French -- and track their child's progress by category on the statistics page. This app runs a little louder than most. Even on the quietest setting you can hear the correct-answer applause across a room.

  • Toddlers will immediately understand the simple format of a voice saying "find the yellow star," and once that object is selected there's immediate applause or kids shouting "yay!" For a wrong selection the object is named, disappears, and the voice says "try again." After a few rounds they select a sticker and put it on a page they can save.

  • There's a rotating group of banner ads at the bottom of the adult settings screen that points you to other apps for the same age group, ads for TV shows (including the very adult show Dexter), insurance companies, cosmetics, and more.

What kids can learn

2

Kids can learn to identify shapes, colors, numbers (including fractions and Roman numerals), letters, animals, trees, tools, and much more. The English, Spanish, and French options make this a good app for learning terms for common objects in a few languages. A few downsides are that the words are mostly out of context; the rewards system could offer more variety; and, while the app offers stats on kids' responses, it doesn't present them in a very useful way. All in all, it's still very worthwhile. This cute and colorful app isn't just for tots; older kids and parents can have fun learning new words.

What's it about?

Toddler Preschool Quizzing is a multiple-choice identification game with many categories of words kids can learn. Parents control which categories kids will practice; they can start kids with colors, shapes, and numbers 1 to 9, for example. More challenging categories include fractions and specific tree and bird names. When kids select an incorrect choice, it disappears, narrowing the items to choose from. A correct choice leads to clapping and kids shouting "yay!" After a few rounds, kids earn a sticker for a virtual sticker book.

Is it any good?

Parents of a toddler created TODDLER PRESCHOOL QUIZZING, and it shows. It's straightforward and simple, yet offers parents plenty of options to challenge young learners (though the fractions, Roman numerals, tree, and flower categories do go a little far in that regard). And the sticker page will help concentrating kids take a breather and say "oooh, clown fish sticker." The applause and "yays" for correct answers are nice too, but come out quite loud, even on the quietest setting. It's a small quibble about an otherwise fun way to tailor learning for little ones.

How kids will learn

Toddler Preschool Quizzing gives kids -- and not just toddlers -– a fun and encouraging way to learn new vocabulary words in three languages. Parents get a lot of control over the categories kids focus on, and within those categories, kids can learn a wide range of words relevant in real life -– everything from numbers to spatulas to a GPS system. The app should offer kids a challenge long after they’ve mastered the basics; once they know their colors in English, for example, they can learn them in Spanish and French.

How parents can help

  • When kids get stumped on an object, repeat the object name to them and describe it. If possible, remind them where they've seen that object before.
  • Point out shapes, colors, animals, etc., everywhere you go with your child and talk through descriptions of them.
  • Pick up books from the library that relate to a child's new vocabulary.
