What parents need to know

Parents need to know that this "free" Toy Story 3 app contains very little for kids to do other than learn about the movie and its related marketing. Any real games -- links to which are prominent on the apps homepage -- must be purchased separately. Disney plans to keep releasing new Toy Story apps throughout 2010 and beyond. Parents also need to be aware that this app gives open access to Facebook and Twitter, as well as Movietickets.com (there's an age gate, but as long as kids enter a birth year that makes them over 13, they're in). Some games sold within this app can only be accessed from within the app.

  • The games have variable difficulty levels, but of those released so far, none are overly challenging.
  • There is no violence in the free base app, but some of the additional games you can buy include very mild cartoon violence -- shooting suction cup darts, getting hit by boulders or other obstacles during a horse ride, etc.

  • The free base app is mostly a big ad for Toy Story 3, the movie. It even includes several different trailers for the film. To play any real games, you need to purchase additional add-on apps that can cost anywhere from 99¢ to $4.99 each. The app also contains ads for the Toy Story 3 console video game. There's a link to find showtimes of Toy Story 3 at local theates and buy tickets.

Is it any good?

Some of the games attached to this TOY STORY 3 app are good -- "Woody's Wild Ride" is reasonably fun and the already-released "Toy Story Mania" shooting gallery game is excellent -- but you have to pay for them. With the free base app, the kids can play a lame "rock, paper, scissors" game and hear a
personalized greeting from Woody (though, if your kid's name isn't on
the preset name list, that feature is useless). There's also a place where they can collect pins that they earn for meeting specific achievements (most of which are earned through the for-pay games). Character bios and movie trailers won't cut it with most kids. And there's too much connectivity with the open Internet to allow young kids free roaming within the app. If you want a great Toy Story game, but the Toy Story Mania app separately. It's $4.99.
