What parents need to know

Parents need to know that Trenches: Generals is an action/strategy game set in World War I that casts the player as British forces pitted against the Germans. Weapons in the game are pretty standard for a war game: guns, bombs, artillery, and poison gas. While there is no blood or screaming, soldiers do get blown to bits when hit by mortars. The action can get intense, making this title for teens and up. Players who opt in to Game Center can access the global multiplayer mode, share high scores, and track achievements, but participation is optional. OpenFeint social network participation is optional as well.

    The game has a thorough tutorial to help players out, and the game takes advantage of the iPad's bigger screen to make it easier to play than the iPhone version of the game. But while moving troops around is fairly easy at the beginning of a battle, once they're assembled in a trench, they huddle together, making it hard to select a soldier. The difficulty level ramps up quickly.

    The game is set during World War I, so you'll face the weapons of that era, including guns, bombs, and poison gas. Artillery attacks cause soldiers to be dismembered, but there is no blood. The game also features a zombie mode.

    Some privacy concerns. Players can opt in to Apple’s Game Center to challenge other players and track scores and achievements. With Game Center, players can send and receive friend requests using an email address or Game Center nickname, revealing the first and last name associated with each party’s Apple ID and, in the case of email requests, the sender’s email address. Players can also opt in to OpenFeint, which allows users to upload real avatar photos, post on message boards, connect with Facebook friends or Twitter followers, and access live chat with strangers.

TRENCHES: GENERALS -- a remake and upgrade of the iPhone Trenches game -- certainly makes good use of the iPad's screen size, but it comes with control issues that detract from the fun. And the complicated nature of the game further hurts it. Moving troops around is fairly easy at the beginning of a battle, but once they're assembled in a trench, they huddle together, making it hard to select an individual soldier. And when you're trying to upgrade that trench to a bunker, that can be critical. Also, the game has a decent tutorial, but ramps up the difficulty quickly, which will alienate newcomers to the strategy genre.
