What parents need to know

Parents need to know that this classic card game has an online multiplayer option that encourages kids to "make new friends" over the Internet. There are some safeguards in place to protect players, but parents should monitor kids' online interactions. For young kids, as long as you steer clear of the online multiplayer, this is a fun way to pass and play the game with family members or friends on the same device. The iPad-only HD version of the app includes a "one-device multiplayer" mode, which allows up to four people to gather around one iPad to play.

  • Tips and attractive tutorials ensure everyone knows how to play the game. The game works in both portrait and landscape modes, and the touchscreen controls work smoothly to drag and drop cards. Unlike some online matchups, we didn't have to wait for other players; we were able to join a game immediately.

  • Privacy is up to the user. Kids can play others online by joining the "Gameloft Live" gaming network, a tap away on the main menu. They can invite friends over the network, or send and receive friend requests from strangers. Profile photos are limited to avatars, of which there's a great selection. The chat rooms display a warning every time you enter not to divulge personal information or agree to meet another member outside of the game. However, there's no indication that Gameloft polices chats to ensure safety.

Is it any good?

This children's classic is designed in appealing primary colors, like the cards. It's pricey, no doubt due to the network gaming option, but a good one to have on the phone for long lines and car trips. Playing is as easy or challenging as you want it to be. Choose a level and play the computer, pass and play with up to three friends, or be randomly matched with others online. And yes, you still have to "call" Uno or you lose points.
