If you can sit still for two and a half hours and want your brain taken over by a film, this is a must-see
I do not feel qualified to review this film, but I will anyway. I'll highlight the bad first: The star gate scene went on way too long, most of the movie is a test of endurance, and the humans which you are supposed to be scared for aren't emotionally reasonate. That said, this is insane. It was made in 1968, and due to insanely good special effects and scientific accuracy, it feels like the concept of space today, not in 1968. A lot of people complain that they can't figure out the plot, well, think harder. Kubrick showed what happened and didn't have people spoon feed you info. You have to think about how it all fits together. Because of this, I think of this movie a lot, so when I am asked to recommend a film, I think of this first. Watch it four times over a week and think about it, and this will land among your favorite films too.

Never understood it until now.
My dad made me watch this four years ago. I never really understood it though. Everyone can watch it- but if you were eight like me you will probably not understand teh meaning of this movie. Anyways, now that I understand it, 5/5!

CSM Overreacted
Thematic elements are not really much of a problem then it CSM thought. Trust, it is one of the best films ever made (undoubtedly the best sci-fi by a llllllloooooooonnnnnnnnnggggggg shot). But really a yellow for violence you see one of those heart rate things go red and a body floating around horrible, right? The only problem is the pace, which some find annoying as heck, but I actually find it kind of soothing when I'm stressed.

Heavily symbolical sci-fi acid trip may be too much for kids
This is a hypnotizing Kubrick film, one with tons of symbolism and metaphors. The young ones most definitely won't understand it.

i think the only reason some people think this movie is any good was because the speacial effects were very advanced at the time. i thought this was probably one of the slowest movies i have ever seen. there was very little action and it was hard to understand what was going on alot of the time.the special effects were pretty cool though, still i dont think it is worth seeing

There's probably nothing that a little kid will be frightened of, it just takes a mature mind to appreciate it. (which even some adults don't seem to have)

Strange and Amazing
Teens will probably enjoy this strange and fantastic movie the most. The special effects are amazing for the late 60'd. The last 30 minutes are very very strange. I'm not sure you're even SUPPOSED to understand it. Kids will probably find it boring.

I loved it
I love it, but it will take an older person to understand it and stay still for it all, since it is long and quiet. The violence isn't really violence, but four people do die, three in peaceful ways. It also, sort of, tells that there could be life out in space or other mysteries. It can come into conflict with the Bible or other religions, but does not state anything outright.

Incredible and totally imaginative.
My rating: PG [borderline with PG-13] for some intense material including a brief violent image.

2001: Does Sci-fi get better than this?
2001 is a pure masterpiece, plain and simple. Stanley Kubrick gives us an intelligent look at not only the battle between man and machine, but also at the mysteries of the known and unknown universe. Yet this film requires the audience to be patient and if the audience does that they will be enthralled. Note to parents: The movie will most likely go over most kids' heads and it is also very slow-paced, which might make younger teens anxious. HAL might also scare younger viewers.

This movie stimulates vary intellegent conversation.
This movie is definitly not for those people who are watching it hoping to see an action pacted sifi movie. This movie shows mans progretion through time. Progretion is sybolized by a tall black monilith. Many people think this movie is centered around the HAL 9000 but it is not!! It is centered aroun the mystery of the Tall Balck Monolith!!This movie would be a lot easier to understand if you read the book first! I made the mistake of not reading the book first and my dad had to explain something to me every few scenes(hes read book). It is a great movie but is definitly not for those who like fast paced movies with lots of action!!Be prepared to use ure brain at the end because it is vary confusing!

Brilliant, Accurate, Ahead-of-its-time, Masterpiece
The greatest film ever made with no exaggeration at all. This film is G, although it might be PG by today's standards. Younger kids may find some images disturbing, and there is one brief use of minor language. Now, onto why it's a brilliant landmark of a film: Everything is not only ahead-of-its-time, but even ahead-of-the-future. This film contains amazing visual effects for 1968. In some cases, not even today's films can top them. One more thing: the most scientifically accurate (if not, one of them) science-fiction film ever created. Stanley Kubrick (director) is a genius. Think of how amazing it could be for someone to make a film this advanced in 1968. They didn't even have desktops back then! I don't care if it's slow-paced, I don't care if a minority of people say it's boring; I'm 12, and this is tied with four other movies as my personal greatest film of all time.

2001: A Space Odyssey
Phenomenal film. There is nothing that you can not show to children, but the film is very confusing and children may not be able to understand it.

Terrific science fiction masterpiece is mildly violent. Tweens and up.
This movie is a masterpiece with special effects and shots you don't see in every movie. It is a masterpiece, highly philosophical and calm, not a typical science fiction flick. The ending is superb and fascinates with fantastic pictures of space. Also, it is one of the most intelligent science fiction movies ever made. With satirical elemets that a computer takes over a spaceship, which unfortunately could become reality one day. "2001: A Space Odyssey" is one of the best scifi movies ever made. This movie should have been rated PG instead of G, because there are some mild violent scenes. (SPOILERS may follow): Three people in hibernation have their life support cut off (they die), a person gets sucked into space (he dies). Also, the scene where HAL gets shut down is a bit... let's say disturbing or frightning. It is hard to discribe, but it has a dark athmosphere. However, it is not too strong. The music can be very unsettling at some parts. (End of SPOILERS) But it is okay for children 10 and up, though they most likely will be bored.
