beware--bad langauge
The teacher in my child's fourth grade class sent a letter of apology home after starting this movie in class. Think twice about these reviews because this movie is not what it seems. Take the time to see it first!

Loved it!
It is just like "Searching for Bobby Fisher" only with spelling instead of chess. Wonderful film. My kids are 7 and 10, both loved it! I would highly recommend it for kids that age!

Even my two boys got hooked on this one
I had to practically force the family to sit down to watch this one....a movie about a spelling bee, cmon mom what were you thinking? But it's like any other traditional sports movie, with an amazing happy ending. My boys (8 and 10) were hooked within the first 20 minutes, and we all stayed up past bedtime. Very well done!

A Diamond In the Rough!
The message portrayed to children is: "Never give up, never quit no matter how difficult. The human spirit can do anything if you persevere." I have seen alot in my days but honestly must say that this movie touched my heart and my daughters.

Best this year!!!
Watch this movie with your children or watch it alone. But watch it. Great story, well acted, super direction, and a lesson to boot. be cautious if you are at all uncomforable about foul talk as some is used.

A great film
My daughter is 8 and she "took" me to see this movie for Mother's Day. We both enjoyed it immensely, and got completely caught up in the drama of the competition. There were a few incidents of language that I felt were unnecessary, but those were manageable in talking to my daughter afterwards. Even more importantly, the film kicked off a great discussion about friendship and what it means to be a good friend. We also talked about taking risks, not being afraid to fail, and always doing your best. It was the best movie we've seen in ages.

Outstanding Movie
I took three kids with me to the movie: age 9, 11, & 12. All three loved the movie as did I. It has a wonderful message about it being okay to be smart and to be "different" because of being bright. The acting was wonderful. I can't wait to go back and see it again.

This is a great heartwarming movie for the whole family. My only concern is a little swearing, but I think that it is okay for 7 year olds.

Go Akeelah!
Well, this film starts out a little boring, but the heroine is someone that you can root for. In fact, this film is educational, what with all the spelling. Pretty good!

surprisingly good
At first, I had no desire to see this movie. But since it seemed to have an interesting plot, I sat down and watched it. This is a truly great movie. It is one of those rare movies that manages to please all. S-words make it inappropriate for little kids, and those same kids may find it boring (what a shame..). Amazing movie for 8+

An Excellent Drama About a Young Girl
This is probably one of the best movies I've seen in my life. I recomend this movie to anyone who is looking for something different. Watch as a family!

Not quite as godd as "Bee Season"
"Akeelah and the Bee" is formulaic but good. The story of a girl who won the National Spelling Bee, is has a great performance by its young lead, Keke Palmer. The ending left me feeling cheated, like most movies of this type, but I liked is a lot. Grade B+, age reccom. 7+ (Remember, if taking your kids to the theater, make sure they're prepared to be quiet, no matter what movie it is. Others want to watch!)

Smart, Inspiring Movie for kids 10 and up.
Akeelah and the Bee is a cute family movie for anyone over 10. There is mild language, but nothing horrible. The film is perfectly casted and the heroine is smart and spunky. Pair that with a good message and you've got Akeelah and the Bee: a fun film for the whole family.

Wonderful, heartwarming movie...
I watched this about a month before competing in the New York State Spelling Bee. It was a great movie and really encouraged me to get working on my spelling words. Also, I learned many new words I may find useful in the future. I also learned a bunch of strategies that helped me achieve 4th place in the 2007 5th grade bee!!! :)

Really great, inspiring film about a black girl who wins the spelling bee.
It's great. A good movie. Akeelah and the Bee has a good, inspiring story. Kids, you'll like it. You might not when you first see the cover, but trust me, it's good. I was jumping with excitement at the end. You will love it. Parents, you'll like it too. There is a tiny little bit of language and family type content, also some teengae stuff, but it's a fun, inspiring story.

Awesome
This movie was so good, I didn't want it 2 end. Akeelah is a gr8 role model and Kiki Palmer played her very well. I sure wish I can spell like those kids did during the competition!

This is such a great movie... ^_^
This is a great movie. It shows how a girl from the hood manages to overcome many obstacles, such as stretched family and financial situations, and the fact she's good at spelling. Her dad (who died before the movie takes place) made her love Scrabble, so she learns how to spell new words to play Scrabble. Her mom doesn't approve, but eventually she wants it just as much as Akeelah does. And along the way, her coach, who is a recluse gardener who just happens to be an ex-UCLA professor, gets courage to go back to teaching. A good movie all around, with a chaste love interest. (Hey, they're thirteen!!) Some tense moments, though; good for ten and up.
