Common Sense Note

Parents need to know that this straight-to-DVD title is a light, harmless romp that doesn't offer much substance to its target audience of young viewers. But it does offer plenty of related merchandise. A version of this DVD actually comes with a plush Care Bear toy and these American Greetings-owned Care Bear characters are also back on TV. The villain character will probably not scare youngsters, but preliminary scenes of his "Care Taker" machine may. A Spanish-speaking addition to the Care Bear fold, Amigo Bear, makes his debut.

Families can talk about Oopsy and his constant clumsiness. For the most part, his friends are very patient with him; why do you think that is? Do you have friends who you can depend on to like you even when you make mistakes? Is there anyone in your life who needs that type of understanding now and again?

Common Sense Review

Reviewed By: Nancy Davis Kho

Issued in conjunction with the 25th anniversary of the Care Bears, CARE BEARS: OOPSY DOES IT! reunites familiar Care Bear characters and introduces a few new ones, as the candy-colored friends prepare the Woo-Hoo World theme park for its grand opening. As a counterpoint to the team spirit and cheer exhibited by clumsy Oopsy and his fellow Care Bears, a grumpy ursine named Grizzle plots the demise of the Care Bears and all their pesky caring, and Oopsy becomes an unwilling accomplice.

There's little to worry about in a movie where the main characters are named Cheer, Funshine, and Share. Even Grizzle's plot to capture the Belly Badges of each Care Bear takes the form of a fun amusement park ride that has the victims begging for more. For the 4-6 year-old set, this straightforward tale has just enough drama in the persona of Grizzle to keep things mildly interesting.

But for the most part, the action is predictable and the relentlessly cheery characters will be a turn-off for older kids. As an unexpected bonus to caregivers who do sit through this, the character Grizzle is given some very funny lines and a heavy-duty Napoleon complex.

A bouncy soundtrack and colorful animation heavy on hearts, puffy clouds, and rainbows are the perfect accompaniment to the lighthearted action. The Belly Badges that differentiate the three-dimensional bears are on vivid display, and may lead kids to collect them at the local toy store (surely part of the motivation behind the movie).

For a movie for this age group featuring bears with a bit more depth, you may enjoy Brother Bear 2. Care Bear fans will also like the TV show.

Violence

The villain is indeed threatening, but his weapon of destruction is an amusement park ride that painlessly removes Care Bear belly badges.

Social Behavior

Lots of emphasis on teamwork, not giving up, and maintaining a positive attitude.

Commercialism

Most versions come packaged with a plush Care Bear. Since the movie is a spin-off of a very successful toy line, it's impossible to avoid commercialism. Grizzle is intent in collecting unique Care Bears and kids might be, too.
