What Parents Need to Know

About A Clockwork Orange

Parents need to know that this is an extremely violent film. Within the first 13 minutes there is a violent beating of a homeless man, an attempted rape, a gang fight, another beating and a rape. Sex and violence are paired. Hope for a "cure" for violence is scuttled. For mature viewers, the messages about violence and cultural decay are present but these may be lost amidst the sensationalism on younger viewers.

Families Can Talk About

  • Families can talk about the nature of violence. Are some people naturally destined to be violent or does it come from experience? Does our current penal system work? Is it ethical to try to brainwash criminals, as they did to Alex? Or are there other means to use psychology that might help?

This is an amazing and yet terrifying film. The book is one of my faves, and its a fantastic movie... This shows that film can be an extremely powerful medium, especially in the hands of a director such as Kubrick. This film shows rape, murder, torture/brainwashing, etc. on screen. Dont let young kids watch this.

love this movie!! iv'e always wanted to see it ever since i was little & saw the cover of it every time i would pass it at Blockbuster. But at least I was mature enough to see it as art from my point of view. I'm 17. I finally saw it when I was either 15 or 16. Of course not all parents will see it as art. If I had kids I wouldn't let them watch this movie 'til they were at least 17 lol Definatly recommend it for mature older teens.

    not for entertainment

my favorite movie of all time. i first watched it when i was 14 and that was definitely too young. my mind couldn't get past the shock so i wasn't able to see the message in the movie. when i was 17 i got the real point of the movie which is- "when a man cannot choose, he ceases to be a man." alex becomes a clockwork orange by being able to only do good works after the treatment. By a clockwork orange i mean that he is like a machine that is wound up and set to be "your true christian." he is filled with sweetness like an orange, but it is artificial hence, a clockwork orange. most people 17 and over will be able to grasp this message if they are willing to think about the movie, and not just watch it for entertainment. extremely good movie, just try to sit through the horror and dig for the message. it is well worth it.

    REAL HORROR SHOW!!!

It is a Terrific Kubrick Film, Macolm Mcdowell is amazing as the role, but it does contain, some graphic nudity and sexual situations! might want to watch it with your kids!

    Good film, maturity required.

A Clockwork Orange. It's neccessary for parents to understand this is a brutaly relentless film that will make viewers uncomforabtable. There are fairly graphic sex scenes and a fair amount of violence. That being said, it's a very thought provoking, complex movie. It shows us the importance of free will. Be warned though, this is only for very mature teens! I reccomend parents see the film before deciding if their teen could handle it.

Great Piece of Art SPOILERS IN THIS REVIEW

I would say that the movie is really a gem of an art piece. The use of excellent imagery coupled with pretty out-of-the-place background score tells us about the uniqueness of this movie. Stanley Kubrick has really applied a lot of thought into this. The director wants the audience to feel something as bad not because he is showing it as bad but because it really is bad. The background music accompanying the ultra violent scenes is comical, and not dramatic or anything else that is commonly associated with such scenes. This gives the viewer an opportunity to feel the bitterness not because the music hints so but because he himself feels so. Viewer's emotions should arise irrespective of what the director is trying to show, and this is one of the greatest successes of the movie. Another glorifying feature is the central idea of the movie. If a human is striped of the choice to choose from good and evil, he no longer remains a human, he becomes a clockwork. When Alex is brain-washed and "programmed" to choose only good, he wasn't accepted by the society and this shows the irony in the objectives of the British Government. The word Orange from the title presumably comes from the word "Ourange" that loosely means man. And hence the title is so appropriate to the movie. The artificiality in dialogues and sets give the movie a unique feature and enhance the grip on it. This also means that the viewer has to get more involved. This is definitely one of the best technically shot movies, another masterpiece of Kubrick like the Space Oddessey. For the uninitiated, set in near future Britain, the movie shows Malcom MacDowell as the head of a group of youngsters involved in sexual violence. Turn of the events leave the protagonist in the hands of the police. Worried by the growing number of prisoners the British Government devises a method of "programming" them so that they always choose the good. Alex is chosen as one of those on which the new system is to be tested. The rest unfolds as a saga of the very human characteristic. Lastly, I would like to say that you may be compelled to leave the movie in between, but if you are watching it for art and cinematic experience, I recommend you to sit through.

A Clockwork Orange is a good film, but...

it deals with a lot of sex/violence. I think a mature 16 year old would be able to handle it, but this movie is definitely not for kids.

It was give an X-rating back in 1971, however by today's standards the worst part of the movie is the sex. It's failry graphic. The violence is mostly PG-13 level, except for maybe one scene with a bit of blood

    A clockwork classic!

One of the greatest director's of all time Stanley Kubrick gives us this insightful shocking classic about gang violence. Sometimes this movie is hard to watch but you know it's just a movie If you were a parent with a daughter I wouldn't show it to her, or if you have a disrespectful punk in the house i wouldn't show this to him either, but if you have a mature kid than let him have a go at it. Besides that the movie is made by it's standout star Malcolm Mcdowell, and how you can ruin a splashy song such as Singin' in the rain, is beside me.

    Okay movie, good horrorshow. LOL

Look, I'm 12. I saw it. Creepy, sexy, violent, the works. A bad movie for kids younger than me, and barely iffy for kids my age. But overall, good.

It exposes your kids to the real world, explain to them why people are crazy. And explain to them why people do this. And yes 12 year olds know what EVERYTHING in this movie is. So when you think your kid is ready show them, we dont want to run your life!

    One of Kubrick's best.

Unfortunately, A Clockwork Orange has lost much of its message. The film deals with adult fears of the youth during a time when the youth was very violent. (Of course, it still is.) I won't call it Kubrick's best movie (I'd choose 1975's Barry Lyndon) but it is still great.

    A Clockwork Orange

Great movie, but also extremely disturbing. I felt sick during some scenes because of the horrible things on display, but that's the intended side-effect so Kubrick did his job well. Aside from the disturb factor, it's an undeniably well-made movie. Very surreal and original, with fantastic camera work, great music, and a couple knockout moments. And compared to modern-day films like 'Saw' and 'Hostel,' 'A Clockwork Orange' is nothing. Which is really kind of sad, and just shows that today's society is coming closer and closer to the violence-obsessed future depicted in 'Clockwork Orange.'

    Okay, People...

I am 13 and this is my favorite movie of all time. As with all my reveiw from this point I am going to start out saying something to the parents: Your kid isn't stupid! They can tell the difference beween a film and reality. Okay now to my reveiw: Colckwork Orange...is the greatest film ever made, Stanley Kubrik is a genius and I don'r mean genius as in oh what a smart guy I mean genius in: he is one of the smartest people of any generation. I think that it would be very hard for kids to try and mimic anything in the is film or even be influenced by it. The time and place that this film takes place in are so surreal and bizzar that it is hard to make any comparison to our times. This film althought so sexually violent and graphic is butiful in it's execution. Alex is a young man, him and his pack of droogs (Nasdat for "freinds") go about engaging in ultra violence by beating the homeless, rapeing teenage and adult woman, and all around harrasing the futeristic land scape of 2012 england. Alex gose to far one night, he kills a woman and is betrayed by his faithful droogs. He is then sent to prison and that is when the story really begins. Parent may be concerened about all the nudity and violence but it is all so surreal that it really shouldn't concern kids, if you have sensitive kids or are still in the delusion that kids should be shuned for sex and violence then this may not be good for them but really most kids can handel it.
